A Midsummer Night's Dream is a comedy by William Shakespeare probably written in 1595 or 1596. The play takes place in Greece and tells the thwarted loves of two young couples.

Lysander and Hermia are in love, but the young woman's father wants her to marry Demetrius, whom Helena is madly in love with. Determined to escape the ultimatum of the Duke of Athens, Lysander and Hermia run away, while Demetrius and Helena pursue them. The four of them find themselves spending the night in a wood, and after several misunderstandings, Demetrius ends up falling in love with Helena, which makes it possible for Lysander and Hermia to get married.

The intervention of elves and fairies gives a fantasy atmosphere to the play, while the presence of a theatre company leads to a final "mise en abyme".
