It is the seat of the Missouri training school for boys (1889) , and of the Kemper military school (1844) . Among its manufactures are earthenware, tobacco, vinegar, flour, farm-gates (iron) , sash and doors, marble and granite monuments, carriages and bricks. Iron, zinc and lead are found in the vicinity, and some coal is mined. ”
