He had a considerable reputation as a scholar, although he published very little. His edition of Book V. of Hooker's "Ecclesiastical Polity," with prolegomena, came out in 1902. A Heron Exhibitioner of University College, Oxford, he took a third in Mods. and a second in Lit. Hum., and was ordained in 1883 to the curacy of Greenwich.
