He became editor of the Providence Journal in 1838, and continued as such for more than twenty years. In 1849, and again in 1850, he was elected Governor of Rhode Island, on the Whig ticket. He was a Republican member of the United States Senate from 1859 until his death, and served twice (1863 and 1871) as president pro tem. ”
