He obtained a Lieutenant’s commission in 1783; and served as principal Agent of Transports during the Egyptian campaign, at the close of which he received the gold medal of the Turkish Order of the Crescent, and was presented by the Masters of the ships under his orders with a handsome sword, as a token of their gratitude and esteem.
