“Nature has produced it for the service of an individual will. Therefore it is only designed to know things so far as they afford the motives of such a will, but not to fathom them or comprehend their true being. Human intellect is only a higher gradation of the intellect of the brutes; and as this is entirely confined to the present, our intellect also bears strong traces of this limitation, [pg 337] Therefore our memory and recollection is something very imperfect. How little of all that we have done, experienced, learnt, or read, can we recall!”
