Paul Hutchens,  North Woods Manhunt (A Sugar Creek Gang Story…

“ The next second there were only four of us left—barrel-shaped Poetry, kind-faced, swell Little Jim, pop-eyed Dragonfly, and red-haired, fiery-tempered, freckle-faced Bill Collins, which is me. Circus, our acrobat, was streaking out through the bushes as fast as he could go toward the lake and the icehouse, but not getting out in the open where John could see him.
“What on earth?” I thought. I didn’t dare yell, or try to stop him by whistling or something, or John Till would have heard me, and who knows what might have happened?

Paul Hutchens,  The Sugar Creek Gang Digs for Treasure

“ For a long time I lay awake, in our dark tent, smelling the smell of mosquito lotion and hearing the noise of Dragonfly’s snoring and the regular breathing of Poetry and Circus, and thinking a lot of things. I hadn’t said my prayers yet, and I was already in my sleeping bag, with the zipper zipped up—although I’d prayed with the rest of the gang around the fire when Eagle Eye prayed outloud for all of us. ”

Paul Hutchens,  The Sugar Creek Gang Goes North

“ Some of the Sugar Creek Gang of us were lying in the long mashed-down grass, in a level place at the top of the steep incline not very far from where the hill goes down real steep to the spring at the bottom where my pop is always sending me to get a pail of real cold fresh water for us to drink at our house. We were all of us lying in different directions, talking and laughing and yawning and pretending to be sleepy, also some of us were tumbling around a little and making a nuisance of ourselves to each other. ”
