“ Trade edition bound in sage-green cloth with the same pictorial stamping in gold, the same illustrations and the same number of pages, but a smaller book, 51⁄2×8. There is another binding in blue cloth with the same stamping and the same dates, but most collectors prefer the green binding, as the end-papers are in green on gray paper. The green binding is no doubt the first issue. All the Haddon Hall set (nine volumes) have the same binding. The limited editions are all bound in full vellum, and the trade editions in the cloth with the same design in gold on the cover. ”

“ The illustrations are the same, except that one illustration is used as a frontispiece, whereas in the wrapper edition the four illustrations are included in the various chapters. The end-papers of the first issue are tan with a design of peacock feathers, while the later issues have plain end-papers. As the blue cloth edition has both the pictorial end-papers and one illustration used as a frontispiece, and as the illustrations are much clearer than in the other cloth editions, we feel fairly certain that this is the real first issue of the cloth edition. ”

“ Bound in white cloth with gold pictorial stamping on the cover and spine and gold lettering; gilt top. 43 numbered pages of printed matter and forty-four full-page illustrations in colour mounted on brown paper, ten drawings in black and white, and a sketch of a book plate on the end-paper, all done by Arthur Rackham. Limited to 1030 copies, of which 1000, numbered 1–1000, are for sale in Great Britain, Ireland and Colonies, and thirty copies, numbered 1001–1030, are for presentation. All are signed by the artist. ”
