“ She had drawn the money at two o’clock, and Jack had found it close on to four.
It seemed incredible that an envelope containing such a large sum of money could have laid on the sidewalk of a prominent thoroughfare like Wall Street, glanced at and walked over by many people, and yet no one had had the curiosity to pick it up.
“What is your name?” asked Mrs. Breeze.
“Jack Hazard, madam.”
“You are an honest boy. I am sure you have a good mother and that she is very proud of you. This money you have returned to me is the savings of our entire life. ”

“ Vance instinctively paused.
“That’s right. I see you’ve got some common-sense,” said Vyce grimly.
“What brought you here?” asked the boy, playing for time.
“Business?”
“Well?”
“You observe this cylinder? It contains a small stick of dynamite. If you do what I tell you it goes back into my pocket; if you refuse—the newspapers will have a new sensation, that’s all.”
“You seem to forget,” said Vance, coolly, “that dynamite is like an overloaded shotgun—it works at both ends. If you drop that thing in this room there isn’t a ghost of a chance for you to escape yourself.” ”

“ I have no such expectation."
"Good luck, like trouble, often comes upon us unaware. At this moment you are close to a fortune in money."
"The dickens I am! I'm afraid you're making a mistake there."
"It is so written in your hand and will come to pass."
She dropped Dick's hand and the seance was over.
"Your hand is, on the whole, a lucky one," she said. "The fates smiled on you at your birth. Favorable planets were in happy aspect. Saturn alone casts its malignant influence across your life's path, but will not prevail." ”

“ The corpse was that of an apparently well-nourished man of about fifty years of age; the bearded features were coarse and rugged, as if he had roughed it upon the plains or in the mountains of the West.
“Looks as if he might have been a miner, eh, Charlie?” suggested Jack.
“Yes, or a prospector, or something of that sort.”
“Or maybe a ranchman.”
“Sure; or a bad man from Piute Flat, or some other tough joint in the wild and woolly.”
“Hardly that,” objected his chum. “It is not a bad face, by any means. I don’t think I should be afraid to trust a fellow with his physiognomy.” ”

“ There’s more money to be made in New York,” said Dick, encouragingly.
“But you’ve got to know how to make it,” retorted Joe, who had lived many years in the great metropolis himself and had found money-getting a serious proposition there.
“You’ve got to know how to make it anywhere, for that matter,” said Dick. “I’ve heard several people say that if you can’t make money in New York you can’t make it anywhere.”
“The papers say there are a hundred thousand men out of work there all the time.”
“That may be; but the same men are not out of work all the time.” ”

“ Before she could reply, in walked that self-same dude, Percy Chamberlain, with a duplicate bunch of violets.
And straightway he pranced up to Millie and held out the flowers, with a low bow.
“Will you accept these flowers, Miss Price? Bought them expressly for you, don’t you know.”
Millie was astonished.
“Why, hello, George Augustus Fitzwilliam!” exclaimed Jack, dropping the paper and gliding over to the dude clerk, whose left hand he seized and shook as if he were some long-lost friend. “We haven’t seen you for two whole days. Where have you been keeping yourself?” ”

“ Dick struggled in vain to free himself from the burly man's grasp, but he was taken at a disadvantage, and found himself quite powerless. He gasped for breath, and was turning black in the face, when Bulger, not intending to kill him, eased up a bit. The sight of the silverware within his reach had put different thoughts into the fellow's head, and seeing the door of a closet standing ajar, he dragged Dick to it, tied his wrists together with a piece of cord, in a rough way, shoved him into the closet, and shut the door tight. ”

“ I have no kith or kin to whom my death would be a blow. I am entirely alone in the world. At one time it was different, and I was well off; but now my team and the few dollars in my pocket-book represent all my earthly possessions. My boy, I have been thinking of you while I have been stretched on my back. You are beginning life quite as friendless, I might say, as I am leaving it. But you appear to have energy and the capacity for hard work. ”

“ No one who saw Bradhurst lounging at times about the office door of the Grand Pacific Hotel would have suspected that impenetrable man had a dollar at stake in any precarious scheme.
Yet there were moments when he had reason to fear that even his eleven millions, now almost swallowed up in the insatiable maw of the corn market, would not be enough to stave off ultimate disaster.
But never for a moment did he lose confidence in the boy who was making such a shrewd fight against the combined bear interests of the Board of Trade. ”

“ Dick walked up to him and asked him what he and the rest of the bunch were doing there.
"We are gypsies," replied the man, who was dark skinned and sported a black mustache. "We are camping here till next spring."
"Got permission to stay from the owner?" asked Dick.
A peculiar smile flickered about the man's mouth.
"We never ask permission. Why should we? The earth was made for all. We are only occupying a small part of it for the time being when the land is of no use to anybody." ”

“ Each one represented 500 shares of the Gopher Gold Mining Company, of Bullfrog, Nevada.
At the sight of them Tuggs seemed to brighten up a bit.
“Do you want to buy them?” he asked, eagerly.
“What are they worth?” asked Jack, smiling at the idea of a messenger boy being able to acquire even 500 shares of any reputable mining stock.
“Millions!” exclaimed the old man.
“That settles it,” thought the boy. “He’s crazy, sure.”
“Why don’t you sell them to somebody that’s got the money to pay for them. You look as if you needed the cash,” said Jack, aloud.
“Nobody will buy them,” replied Tuggs, sadly. ”

“ He had probably been gone a couple of minutes and Dick was watching the pretty stranger for perhaps the hundredth time, when something startling occurred which changed the whole aspect of affairs in the twinkling of an eye.
A tremendous shock stopped the train’s momentum and piled the cars on top of each other, hurling a couple down the embankment into the river, almost every car becoming a shapeless wreck, and human beings, full of life and hope a moment before, were suddenly ushered into eternity or maimed and mangled for life. ”

“ This was strictly a fact; though Vance knew very well that the matter at which he hinted was not in the slightest danger of ever being settled in his mother’s favor at that late day.
“You don’t say,” replied Dudley, an incredulous smile curling his lips.
“As to Mr. Whitemore,” added Vance, “my experience in his employ is that he is not accustomed to send a boy like me to execute important business.”
“That’s true,” winked Dudley, putting down the glass he had just drained; “but then one can never tell just what Whitemore may do. He’s as shrewd as they make them nowadays.” ”

“ After taking out a somewhat rumpled shirt, a suit of underclothes and a couple of pair of socks, Prawle said:
“Now, young gents, I’m going to show you some of the finest specimens of real virgin copper ever dug out of mother earth.”
“Oh!” exclaimed Charlie, a slight shade of disappointment in his voice, “I thought it was gold or silver quartz you had there. But copper——”
“Young man,” said Prawle, diving one hairy paw into his grip and fishing out a magnificent specimen of raw copper, “look at that and hold your breath. There is ninety per cent of copper in that hunk. Think of that! ”

“ Walden, leaving the lodge, went to the chiefs, whom he found gathered in council.
"Who is Young Elk?" demanded Walden.
"He is my kinsman," said one of the chiefs.
"He is a meddler!" snarled the renegade. "I will kill him if he does not take care!"
"No, False Heart will not!" cried the old chief. "False Heart lies, he has told crooked tales of the paleface, he is a bad man. He would make us go on the warpath when the whites have not wronged us. It is he who will have to take care lest Young Elk kill him!" ”

“ It will break my heart to lose you, Dick, but at least it will be a satisfaction to know you’ve reached your proper station.”
“Don’t you talk nonsense, Joe,” said Dick, grasping his hand with a feeling that could not be mistaken. “Chums we’ve been in adversity, and so shall we remain in the days when prosperity has overtaken one of us at least. Glad as I am to recover my father, I am proud to say that, without any help from him and but little in a business sense from even Mr. Nesbitt, I have succeeded in making my way to the front, even if I am only seventeen years old.” ”

“ I realized $9,000,000.”
“Nine millions!” gasped Vance, who was astonished at the sum, although he was accustomed to move in a business atmosphere where transactions involving millions were a common occurrence.
“Exactly—nine millions,” nodded Bradhurst, enjoying his young acquaintance’s amazement. “So you see you saved the life of a man actually worth $11,000,000 in cash and securities. If my head had been smashed by that truck those millions would have had no further interest for me. While every man’s life is presumed to be his most precious possession, mine has more than a usual value.” ”

“ Charlie rushed into the shop for more brandy and returned in a moment.
Gideon Prawle gulped it down at a draught, and it brought him instant relief.
“That’s good stuff, and it warms me innards nicely,” he said, smacking his lips with a sigh of satisfaction.
“It’s the best in Sackville,” said Charlie. “It’s none of your common saloon firewater. No, sir; that is kept exclusively for the sick.” ”

“ The manager looked him over attentively and seemed to be pleased with his looks.
“Well, Jack,” said Mr. Bishop, “Mr. Atherton has spoken to me about you. You seem to be a smart boy, and that is what we want here. You appear to have acquired something of a reputation for nerve and cool-headedness for one so young. You have made good friends for yourself by your courageous act of yesterday, which, I see, is reported in the morning papers. It remains for you now to justify the excellent opinion they have formed of you. ”

“ As he started to leave the sharp-eyed clerk noticed that a five-carat stone was missing from the tray.
"One minute, sir," said the clerk. "You forgot to return one of the diamonds you were looking at."
"I did? Nonsense! Do you take me for a thief? I only handled one of them at a time and after looking it over laid it down on the showcase, or on that mat."
"Nevertheless, one of the diamonds is missing," said the clerk, pushing a button under the counter which summoned the manager of the store. The customer waxed indignant and protested that he had no knowledge whatever of the diamond. ”
