“ Tiedemann, a German revolutionist, who came to this country in 1838. Mr. Tiedemann was born in Dixon, Ill., January, 1840, but the family settled in Philadelphia, where Mr. Tiedemann was educated and first went into business. When the President called for volunteers in 1861, Mr. Tiedemann was one of the first to respond. He served with distinction throughout the war, rising rapidly in rank and acting as Assistant Adjutant-General on Gen. Carl Schurz's staff. Gen. Meade refused to accept his resignation when offered, saying that he was “too good a man to lose.” ”
