Edward Belcher

Definition and stakes

Helen S. Wright,  The Great White North

“ In August, 1853, he had volunteered to lead a party to Sir Edward Belcher’s squadron near Cape Beecher in Wellington Channel. They started on a Friday, the 12th, from Beechey Island,—Harvey, Johnson, Madden, and Hook, with Lieutenant Bellot in the lead,—carrying despatches from Captain Pullen of the North Star.
The rottenness of the ice at this season makes travel particularly dangerous, and Bellot was cautioned to keep close to the eastern shore of Wellington Channel. They were provided with a light India-rubber boat, which was easily dragged upon the sledge.

Frank B. Goodrich,  Ocean's Story; or, Triumphs of Thirty Centuries

“ Sir Edward Belcher had also been compelled to abandon his vessels, the Assistance and Pioneer: the four crews met at Beechey Island, and embarked on board their storeship, the North Star, which had been laid up for two years. They arrived in England late September. The reader will at once recognise the Resolute as the ship which was found in Baffin's Bay, in 1855, by Captain Buddington, of the New London whaler George Henry. She had forced her way, unaided by man, through twelve hundred miles of Arctic ice. ”

Portrait of Edward Belcher Edward Belcher,  Narrative of a Voyage Round the World Performed in Her Majesty's Ship Sulphur… (1843)

“ On her return, we learned that the Leonora barque, having some English amongst her crew, was at anchor inside, and that water might be obtained close to the beach. On the following morning, we beat in, and anchored in a snug berth in twelve fathoms. We determined the position; obtained ten tons of water and one bullock; and at midnight were again en route.
The bay is small, but safe, anchorage good, water brackish. There are no houses, — men and families living exposed under the trees, and had not the Leonora been there, it is probable that we should not have met a soul.
