Marisma

Definition and stakes

Walter John Buck,  Wild Spain (España agreste)

“ The night of April 10th we spent at Rocío, a squalid hamlet clustered around the chapel of Nuestra Señora del Rocío, an ancient shrine visited yearly at the vernal festival by faithful pilgrims. We were tired of the cold and comfortless nights sub Jove in the marisma, where upturned punts afforded scant shelter from the piercing winds of the small hours, and where the chill exhalations of night kept one awake listening to the chorus of frogs and flamingoes and the melancholy boom of the bittern. ”

Walter John Buck,  Unexplored Spain

“ In foreground, background, and horizon both earth and sky are filled with teeming, living multitudes; while the shimmering grey monotony of the marisma, tessellated with its grey armies of the Anatidae, is everywhere brightened and adorned by rosy battalions of flamingoes. And out there, far beyond our visible horizon, there wander in that watery wilderness the wild camels, to which we devote a separate chapter.
Flamingoes ignore the limits of continents, and shift their mobile headquarters between Europe and Africa as the respective rainfall in either happens to suit their requirements.

Portrait of Francis Xavier Lasance Francis Xavier Lasance,  Prayer-book for Religious (1904)

“ I adore Thee in union with holy Mary, all the angels and saints, and all holy souls upon earth.
I deeply grieve for all my sins, especially for those which wound Thy Sacred Heart, and render my heart most unlike Thine.
I offer Thee, O Lord, all I possess: my soul with all its faculties, my body with all its senses. Miserable as this offering is, my God, it is all I have; and in return I ask the light of the Holy Spirit, that I may know Thy will — and Thy grace, that I may do it.
