Mercy

“ Look on me with the eyes of thy mercy, O Lord Jesus Christ, everlasting king, God and man, who wert crucified for man. Graciously hear me who hope in thee; have mercy on me who am full of miseries and of sins, O thou full and overflowing Fountain of pity and of mercy. Hail, thou saving Victim, offered for me and all mankind upon the tree of the Cross. Hail, thou noble and precious Blood, which dost ever flow forth from the wounds of my crucified Lord Jesus Christ, to wash away the sins of the whole world. Remember thy creature, O Lord, whom thou hast redeemed with thine own Blood. ”

“ Thy mercy has carried me to this hour. If I have done any good, it has been through the operation of Thy grace; and for the evil that I have done I have not been visited with any great judgment, nor given over unto death. I am yet in the land of the living; the living shall praise Thee, Lord; with a most thankful spirit do I kneel before Thee, Father of spirits, for I have provoked Thee every day, and Thou hast had mercy upon me. ”

“ All so-called calumny or vilification is only Thy own purifying and invigorating mercy. Every beat of the heart, with its push and its pause, is the pendulum-swing of Thy recurring mercy, now advancing into sight and then receding into secrecy. Every heave of the breath signifies a two-fold mercy—Thy in-coming, life-bringing and Thy out-going, refuse-removing mercy. ”

“ While at Thy feet we fall,
And humbly with united cry,
To Thee for mercy call.
The guilt is ours, but grace is Thine,
O turn us not away,
But hear us from Thy lofty throne,
And help us when we pray. ”

“ Is the death of the wicked a pleasure to thee? Are not thy mercies over all thy works? And when thou art angry, wilt thou not remember mercy? Hast thou not said, I desire not the death of a sinner, and the wickedness of the wicked shall not hurt him, in what day soever he shall turn from his wickedness? Is there not, then, time for repentance as long as there is life?
6. Penance not to be delayed from regard to the divine mercy.
Christ. Great indeed is thy folly, whosoever thou art, who forgettest my justice, to flatter thyself with the hope of my mercy. ”

“ Cast on them a look of mercy, free them from their pains, and put them in possession of the inheritance of heaven. Remember that they are the work of thy hands, redeemed by the most precious blood of thy divine Son Jesus; deal with, them according to thine infinite mercy. Hear, O Lord, the prayer I make to thee with all confidence, through the merits of the passion and death of thy most dear Son Jesus, that they may be consoled, and may enjoy without delay that immortal glory which thou hast prepared for thine elect. O merciful Lord, have pity upon them, according to our trust in thee. ”

“ Every drop in the deep ocean is Thy crystal mercy. Every ray from the glorious orb of day is Thy effulgent mercy. Every star in the expansive firmament is Thy beaming mercy. Every flower that makes the earth an Eden is Thy fragrant mercy. Every lisp of the innocent babe fresh from Thy bosom is Thy cheering mercy. Every look of confidence and trust from eye to eye is Thy unifying mercy. Every word of genuine insight, wherever spoken, is the gospel of Thy own illuminating mercy. Every so-called obstacle, now a hindrance, anon a triumph, is Thy own reassuring mercy. ”

“ Divine victim for our sins, have mercy on us! Be our mediator with Thy Father; avert from us the punishment we have deserved for our sins, deliver us from all dangers that threaten us, and from all evil. Promote the welfare of Thy Church, and remember in Thy mercy those who have gone before us with the sign of faith and rest in peace. (Remember the departed for whom you intend to pray.)
To these, O Lord, and to all that sleep in Christ, grant, we beseech Thee, a place of refreshment, light, and peace. ”

“ Adorable Heart of Jesus, source of true contrition and ever merciful to the penitent sinner, impart to our hearts the spirit of penance, and give to our eyes a fountain of tears, that we may sincerely bewail our sins now and for the rest of out days. Oh, would that we could blot them out, even with our blood! Pardon them, O Lord, in Thy mercy, and pardon and convert to Thee all that have committed irreverences and sacrileges against Thee in the sacrament of Thy love, and thus give another proof that Thy mercy is above all Thy works. ”

“ Look therefore for mercy only in Christ, for his sake rely upon God’s mercy. The terms of the gospel are, repent and believe; gracious terms! Mercy for fetching, nay, mercy for desiring, nay, for nothing but receiving. Dost thou desire mercy and grace? I know thou dost. Even this is the gift of God to desire, hunger after Christ; let desires put you upon endeavour, the work itself is sweet: yea, repentance and mourning itself hath more sweetness in it, than all the world’s comforts. Upon repentance and believing comes justification, after this sanctification, by the spirit dwelling in us. ”

“ For was not life a great mercy? Was it not a greater mercy to serve God and do good; to enjoy all the comforts of life, the fellowship of saints, the comfort of ordinances, and much of Christ in all; than to lie rotting in the grave? ”

“ O God of mercy, before Whose door the quintessence of mercy hath bowed down, and round the sanctuary of Whose Cause loving-kindness, in its inmost spirit, hath circled, we beseech Thee, entreating Thine ancient grace, and seeking Thy present favor, that Thou mayest have mercy upon all who are the manifestations of the world of being, and to deny them not the outpourings of Thy grace in Thy days.

“ Show forth upon us, O Lord, in Thy mercy, Thy unspeakable loving kindness; that Thou mayest both loose us from all our sins, and deliver us from the punishment which we deserve from them.
O God, who by sin art offended, and by penance pacified, mercifully regard the prayers of Thy people making supplication to Thee, and turn away the scourges of Thine anger, which we deserve for our sins. ”

“ But let thy mercy, O most gracious Father, come upon us; and, showing us the riches of thy glory, make us vessels of thy mercy, prepared unto thy glory;5 and where sin abounded, let grace more abound.
Behold, we forbear threatenings to others, that we may have thee our Lord propitious to us in heaven. Put thou also on us, as thine elect, the bowels of mercy, benignity, humility, modesty, patience, that we may be kind to one another, compassionate, and forgiving one another, even as thou in Christ hast forgiven us; to no man rendering evil for evil ”

“ O God do not despise me nor Cast me from thee, but have mercy Good Lord have mercy upon me, and make me what thou would have me to be, to enter into the Kingdom of heaven, and then receive my Poor Soul at the last for Jesus Christs his Sake. ”

The voice of mercy.
Hear, O sinner! mercy hails you,
Now with sweetest voice she calls;
Bids you haste to seek the Saviour,
Ere the hand of Justice falls:
Trust in Jesus;
’Tis the voice of mercy calls.
2 Haste, O sinner! to the Saviour—
Seek his mercy while you may;
Soon the day of grace is over;

“ For they know not what Thou hast ordained for them by virtue of Thy mercy that encompasseth the whole of creation. Outwardly, O Lord, they are weak and helpless; inwardly they are but orphans. Thou art the All-Bountiful, the Munificent, the Most Exalted, the Most Great. Cast not, O My God, the fury of Thy wrath upon them, and cause them to tarry until such time when the wonders of Thy mercy will have been made manifest, that haply they may return unto Thee, and ask forgiveness of Thee for the things they have committed against Thee. Verily, Thou art the Forgiving, the All-Merciful. ”

“ Had very comfortable feelings yesterday in meeting. Oh, it was joyful to believe that God was near to bless and to forgive. This evening, I have longed to commit my soul and its keeping into my Father's hands. Oh for a little more faith in His infinite, everlasting mercy! To come even boldly to the throne of grace, is the high calling even of those most in need of mercy. ”

“ Woe to us if Thou judgest us without mercy! To appease Thy justice, we have recourse, after the example of Thy saints, to the unbloody sacrifice of Him Who was pleased to be nailed to the cross for us, and Who never ceaseth to make intercession with Thee in our behalf. Forgive us our sins; forgive also our brethren departed the sins which they committed against Thee, whilst they abode in this land of exile. Let Thy mercy prevail over Thy justice, since Thou hast promised graciously to hear those who shew mercy, and be Thou faithful to Thy promises. ”

“ Let Thine ears be attentive to the voice of my supplication.
If Thou, O Lord, shalt mark our iniquities: O Lord, who shall stand it?
For with Thee there is merciful forgiveness: and by reason of Thy law I have waited for Thee, O Lord.
Because with the Lord there is mercy: and with Him plenteous redemption. ”

“ I tremble at the sentence of thy apostle: he that receives unworthily receives his own damnation; for I cannot but acknowledge myself infinitely unworthy; nor should I dare ever to come to thee, were I not excited by thy most loving and pressing invitation, and encouraged by thy infinite goodness and mercy: it is in this mercy, which is above all thy works, I put my whole trust ”

“ Have mercy upon him, O Lord, and save him from pride. O Lord have mercy, and wean him from the pride of life. Break him down, Lord, and make him humble. Have mercy upon him. Have mercy.”
He went on telling a long story about me, informing the Lord of my pride, and how sure I was of destruction unless I should speedily repent, and closed up with vehement cries of “Have mercy! Have mercy! Mercy! Mercy!” This was his way of treating those who did not seem to receive him with feelings of great reverence for his special humility and extra holiness. ”

“ If you err, err on the side of mercy. Think, when you lay your head this night on your pillow, the day has not been lost, for it was marked by an act of mercy. Think, when on your death-bed, you plead at the throne of God, He has said, 'Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.' Mercy is the property and the favorite attribute of our divine Redeemer; and tinder is not so soon kindled by fire when applied to it, as the divine mercy blots out all sin when it is implored with a heart full of confusion and truly penitent. ”

“ Who even doubts that to hear confession and consult unto salvation and to preach the Word of God are works of mercy? Similarly to present the sacrament of the eucharist to the devout people and to baptize are works of mercy. ”

“ Shut not up thy mercies in thy anger, and let not the fount of thy inexhaustible mercy be dried up towards me because of my sins; for thou hast mercy upon all, and hatest nothing that thou hast made, and overlookest the sins of men for the sake of repentance. ”

“ May God grant His mercy that that soul so corrupt in life, and that body so corrupt in death, despite the double signification shown in his life and end, may be met with mercy by the Great Judge at the final judgment! ”

When my poor heart, oppressed with suffering and exhausted by its continual struggles with the enemies of its salvation, shall feel the pangs of death,

“ But mercy has general conditions; and that which is mercy to the myriads may seem hard to the one, and that which seems hard to the one in the pang of a moment may be mercy when viewed by the eye that looks on through eternity. ”
