John Armstrong,  The Pastor in his Closet — Saturday

“ I believe in Thee, Father, and Thee, Son, and Thee, Holy Ghost, One God, though Thou art a mystery unto me, though I am a mystery unto myself. I commend myself and all that are mine in most profound humility into Thy hands, kneeling upon the earth, bowing myself to the earth; “into Thy hands I commend my spirit,” and the spirits of all those whom Thou hast given me. Do unto us what seemeth Thee good. We are Thine, Father. Deliver us in the hour of death and in the day of judgment; deliver us from the place of hell and from eternal death, through the precious blood of our Saviour Jesus Christ. ”

John Armstrong,  The Pastor in his Closet — Wednesday

“ What am I, with all these years of sin that have passed over my head, all this growth of sin in me, every day with its own burden of sin, and requiring its own act of repentance! And yet. Lord, I am to teach these little ones. Humble me while I am teaching them; help me to fill their souls with true godly knowledge, not with the letter, but with the spirit, with love of Thee and of Thy blessed Gospel. Preserve their innocency; keep them from the evil world, that they may be Thine, even from their youth up, and grow in grace unto their lives' end. ”

John Armstrong,  The Life and Letters of the Rev…

“ In a few weeks, however, the blossoms and the fruit have almost totally disappeared, and have left us to sorrow in temporary disappointment, or to find comfort only in the cheering exhilaration of hope. Then, again, the winter has passed, and lovely spring has once more appeared. But it is all well; the harvest of none of our labours is to be expected here; it is in that blessed world above that we shall reap, provided that we faint not; and what greater stimulus can we need to keep urging us forward even in the midst of every species of discouragement? ”
