George Edward Cokayne

“ COKAYNE, Sir WILLIAM (d. 1626) , lord mayor of London, was second son of William Cokayne of Baddesley Ensor, Warwickshire, merchant of London, sometime governor of the Eastland Company, by Elizabeth, daughter of Roger Medcalfe of Meriden, Warwickshire, being descended from William Cokayne of Sturston, Derbyshire, a younger son of Sir John Cokayne [q. v.] ”

“ She was living when he was cr. 26 Oct. 1624, BARON DEINCOURT OF SUTTON, co. Derby, and subsequently, 11 Nov. 1645, EARL OF SCARSDALE. In that peerage this Baronetcy then merged, and so continued till on the death, 17 July 1736, of the 4th Earl, Baron, and Baronet, it and all other his honours became extinct. See Peerage. ”

“ Sir Richard Bacon, Bart. [1611 and 1627] , of Colchester, cousin and h. male, being 8th Bart. of the creation of 29 July 1627. He was br. of the 5th and 7th Bart, of that creation (which see) all three being sons of Sir Edmund Bacon, 4th Bart. [1627] , s. and h. of Sir Henry Bacon, 3d Bart. [1627] , s. and h. of Sir Henry Bacon, 2d Bart. [1627] , s. and h. of Sir Butts Bacon, 1st Bart, so cr. 29 July 1627, who was yr. s. of Sir Nicholas Bacon, of Redgrave, cr. a Bart. 11 May 1611 as aforesaid. He was b. 22 Feb. and bap. 5 March 1695, at Gillingham, Norfolk. ”

“ He gave each of his numerous daughters 10,000l. on marriage, leaving his son a rent roll of above 12,000l. a year. He died 20 Oct. 1626, in his sixty-sixth year, at his manor house at Comb Nevill in Kingston, Surrey, and was buried in St. Paul's Cathedral, where a stately monument with an elaborate inscription was erected to him. His funeral sermon was preached by the celebrated Dr. Donne. His widow remarried, 6 July 1630, Henry (Carey) , fourth lord Hunsdon, first earl of Dover, and, dying 24 Dec. 1648, was buried with her first husband at St. Paul's. ”

“ Sir Robert Shirley, Bart. [1611] , of Staunton Harold, and of Astwell aforesaid, and of Chartley Castle, co. Stafford, br. and h., matric. at Oxford (Corpus Christi) , 12 Aug. 1645, as a Gentleman Commoner; suc. to the Baronetcy, 7 June 1646. On the death (14 Sep. 1646) of his uncle, the 3d Earl of Essex (above mentioned) , he suc. to a moiety of the estates of the Devereux family, including Chartley Castle. He was the first Protestant of his race, and rebuilt the church at Staunton Harold. ”

“ John died a prisoner in 1648. ↑ "The estate of St. Donats Castle was bequeathed to the Drakes of Shardeloes, now [1838] possessed by Thomas Tyrwhitt Drake, Esq. Merthymawr and Monknash passed to Hugh Bowen, Esq., and Penlline Lampey and Cwm Hawey to Bussey Mansel, Esq." [Burke's Extinct Baronetcies.] Jane, the great aunt of the last Baronet (da. of the 3d Bart.) , had m. George Bowen, of Kettlehill, co. Glamorgan, and Dame Catharine Mansel, widow of the 3d Bart., had m. Bussey Mansel. ”

“ II. 1622. Sir Richard Molyneux, Bart. [1611 (1) ] [1] , of Sefton aforesaid; born about 1594; mat. at Oxford (Brasenose Coll.) , 24 Nov. 1609, at the age of 15; Knighted, 27 March 1613; M.P. for Wigan, 1614; for Lancashire, 1625 and 1628-29; suc. to the Baronetcy, 8 Feb. 1622. He m. about 1618, Mary, 1st da. ”

“ Sheriff of Suffolk (again) 1581, and was cr. a Bart., as above, at the institution of that Order, 22 May 1611, being the 1st person [2] ever advanced to that dignity. [3] He m. 1564, Anne, da. and h. of Edmund Butts, of Thornage, Norfolk, by Anne, da. and coheir of Henry Bures or Buers, of Barrow, co. Suffolk. She d. 19 Sep. 1616, aged 68. He d. 12 or 22 Nov. 1624, at Cutford, Suffolk. Both bur. at Redgrave. M.I. His will pr. 1624.
II. 1624. Sir Edmund Bacon, Bart. [1611] , of Redgrave aforesaid, s. and h., about 1570; M.P. for Eye, 1588-89 and for Norfolk,1593 and 1625; suc. ”

“ Comptroller of the Household to Queen Anne, 1704-08 and 1711-12; one of the Commissioners of the Treasury, 1710-11; one of the Tellers of the Exchequer, 1712-14; Vice Admiral of South Wales, and a Privy Councillor, 1704. He suc. to the Baronetcy, 17 Nov. 1706. He m. (while under age) , 18 May 1686, at Westm. ”

“ This was followed, about five weeks later (29 June 1611) , by a larger batch of fifty-two (53 according to Dugdale and others, who, erroneously, include "Dallison" therein) , and, subsequently, on 24 Sep. by one of four, and on 25 Nov. following by one of seventeen, after which creations (91 in all, ending with that of Holte, all being in 1611) , each creation in this reign, and for the most part in those following, is dated on a separate day. ”

“ Mary, Devon, Mary Anne Elizabeth, da. of his paternal uncle, Dashwood Bacon, of Ottery St. Mary, by Anne Barbara, da. of (—) Ogilvie, of the island of St. Christopher, planter. She d. 24 Oct. 1820, and was bur. at Raveningham. He d. ”

“ He d. 2 Dec. 1624, and was bur. (in state) at Laughton. Inq. p.m. at Lewes 5 Sep. 1625. Will (directing his burial to be at St. Michael's, Lewes) , dat. 14 April 1620, pr. 5 Feb. 1624/5. His widow was bur. 7 March 1634, at Laughton.
II. 1624. Sir Thomas Pelham, Bart. [1611] , of Halland in Laughton aforesaid, only s, and h., bap. 22 Sep. 1597, at East Hoathley, Sussex; being 27 at his father's death, when he suc. ”
