Richard Barnum,  Don, a Runaway Dog: His Many Adventures

“ Don smelled a strange, wild-animal smell in the air, like the one coming from the circus passing along the road, the day Squinty, the comical pig, had run away. Then, around a bend in the road came two men, one of them leading a big bear by a chain, and the other carrying the horn.
“Oh, it’s a bear!” cried Alice. “I’m afraid!”
“Don’t be afraid,” said Bob. “It’s only a tame, trained bear.”
Don and Rex both barked at the bear, but, to their surprise, the bear spoke to them in animal language.
“Don’t be afraid,” the bear said, kindly. “I won’t hurt any one. I’m only going to do some tricks.”

Richard Barnum,  Squinty the Comical Pig: His Many Adventures

“ You are a pig, I can see that, for we have one in our circus, and the clown rides him around the ring, and it is too funny for anything."
"Ha, so you are a monkey?" asked Squinty. "But what do you mean by a circus?"
"That's a circus," answered Mappo, pointing with one paw through a hole in the bush, at the queer animals, and the red, gold and green wagons. "That is, it will be a circus when they put up the big tent, and all the people come. Didn't you ever see a circus?"

Richard Barnum,  Winkie, the Wily Woodchuck: Her Many Adventures

“ It was a man with a gun shooting at us,” interrupted Blunk.
“Oh, my dears! A man with a gun, shooting!” cried Mrs. Woodchuck. “Oh, my poor children! What shall we do? I wish your father was home! Oh, this is dreadful!”
“Don’t worry, Mother!” said Blunk kindly. “We ran away from the man with the gun, and I don’t believe he can find us. And neither of us got shot. Winkie threw herself down in the clover and hid just in time.” Blunk was proud of his clever, wily sister.
“Oh, but suppose he comes here!” cried Mrs. Woodchuck.
“I don’t believe he can find our burrow,” said Blinkie, a bit proudly.
