William Heyliger,  Don Strong, Patrol Leader

“ The hike home was all downhill. The scouts swung along gayly. The prospect of penetrating Lonesome Woods shortened the miles. What would they find? What strange adventures would befall them?
"Adventure? Piffle!" said Tim. "Give me Danger Mountain."
"Sssh!" warned Ritter. "Mr. Wall will hear you."
"Gee! Can't I even say what I'd like?" Off in the distance a dog barked.
Tim barked in reply. The dog answered. It became a duel of sound.
Tim was in his glory. Weird, nerve-racking screeches came from his throat. Presently the uproar became unbearable.
Mr. Wall's whistle shrilled. The noise stopped.

William Heyliger,  You're on the Air

“ Wylie was the old Wylie, snarling. “I thought you wanted show business.”
“I do.”
“No, you don’t. You want the spotlight and the fan mail. Look, kid.” Wylie came out of the chair and swung the boy about by the shoulders. “As a producer, you don’t interpret one part. You interpret all the parts. You set the tempo. You touch the strings and the cast vibrates. You take a script and make it live. You make the show, molding it and shaping it. You’re the show, all of it.”
Joe’s lips parted. Here was Wylie’s strange power to move him, to galvanize him. Production took on a color of possibility.

William Heyliger,  Detectives, Inc.: A Mystery Story for Boys

“ A measured beat, a steady rhythm that hammered and throbbed like an unchanging pulse. Hammer and throb, hammer and throb! It beat upon the ears. Hammer and throb! All at once the sound stopped in the middle of a stroke and did not come again. The dark house lay in frozen silence.
“Doctor!” The farmer’s voice shook. “You know what that was?”
“Do you, Sweetman?”
The man’s answer came in a hoarse whisper. “I think it was a heart beating.”
Joe’s throat was a cramped vice. The flashlight shook in his hand and made fantastic splotches of light upon the floor.
“Upstairs,” Mr. Sweetman croaked.
