“ Now, Wenzel, come!
Kathinka.
My child, take courage,
Let things be as they are!
Marie.
And if he deserted me,
I'll ever remain free!
I will sorrow life away
In quiet solitude!
The Others.
In forgetfulness
Will your sorrow soon vanish!
Kezal (notices Wenzel and calls.)
Here, Wenzel, here, my little Wenzel!
Forget your bashfullness!
Wenzel
(kommt hervor, ägerlich) .
Was giebt es denn schon wieder?
(Erblickt Marie, freudig erstaunt.)
Die, die, die sprach ich heute Morgen!
Nu . . . nun ist nichts mehr zu besorgen!
Kathinka, Agnes, Kruschina, Micha, Kezal.

“ Wenzel.
Let me go!
Agnes.
Be sensible! Father and I
Have it all arranged. It is high time
To give you a sensible wife!
Kezal.
Wenzel
Will sign here, and then
The affair is settled.
Wenzel.
Wh-What is this paper for?
Micha.
That you marry
Marie Kruschina!
Wenzel.
No. . . no! I
Don't want her at all!
Agnes, Micha, and Kezal.
Ah, that strikes me like a thunder-clap!
I know not whether to trust my ears?
Where did you lose your senses?
Wenzel.
Das Schicksal kenn' ich, das mir droht:
Sie will mich quälen bis zum Tod!
Agnes, Micha und Kezal.

“ Hans is seated at one end of the table, and Kezal at another. They drink. Hans is extolling the joy of loving and being loved, when Kezal comes up to him and tells him that love is nothing if one has no money, but Hans disagrees. Young men and girls are dancing. Wenzel comes in rather tipsy, when Marie approaches him, and begs him not to marry the girl he is promised to, because she loves another. She also tells him that she knows a very pretty girl, who is madly in love with him. Wenzel promises to renounce the girl, and is very much touched by the interest Marie has taken in him. ”
