“ Were it not for her righteousness, she would not have given birth.
אמר רבי יצחק: כתיב (משלי כג) אל יקנא לבך בחטאים כי אם ביראת ה' כל היום ואת אמרת ותקנא רחל באחותה?! אלא מלמד, שקינאתה במעשיה הטובים, אמרה: אילולי שהיא צדקת, לא היתה יולדת.
and she said to Jacob, "Give me children, or else I will die" וַתֹּ֤אמֶר אֶֽל־יַעֲקֹב֙ הָֽבָה־לִּ֣י בָנִ֔ים וְאִם־אַ֖יִן מֵתָ֥ה אָנֹֽכִי
Rabbi Shmuel: Four are considered as though they are dead: A leper, a blind person, one who that has no children, and one who is impoverished. ”

“ In the plain sense, Rachel said to Jacob to give her children, but really she was saying that he should pray for her, but to continue to pray for her until she would get children in any case, but if not, she would die of her grief. She spoke improperly because of her jealousy, thinking that because of his love for her Jacob would fast, put on sackcloth and ashes and pray until she had children, so that she would not die of her grief.
לשון רש"י, שמי שאין לו בנים חשוב כמת, והוא מדרש רבותינו (ב"ר עא ו) . ואני תמה, אם כן למה חרה אפו ולמה אמר התחת אלוהים אנכי, ושומע אל צדיקים ה'. ”

“ Rather, their assets declined. אמר רבי שמואל: ד' חשובים כמתים: מצורע, וסומא, ומי שאין לו בנים, ומי שירד מנכסיו. מצורע דכתיב (במדבר יב) : אל נא תהי כמת. סומא, דכתיב (איכה ג) במחשכים הושיבני, כמתי עולם. מי שאין לו בנים מנין? שנאמר: הבה לי בנים, ואם אין מתה וגו. ומי שירד מנכסיו מנין? שנאמר (שמות ד) : כי מתו כל האנשים המבקשים את נפשך. ”
