Obituary: Mary Isabella Irwin Brotherton (1910)
“ Mrs. Brotherton, who died last week at Freshwater, aged 90, was a remarkable women. She was the daughter of John Melford Rees, a Puisne Judge of the Calcutta Bench, and widow of the landscape painter Augustus Henry Brotherton. Many of her stories and poems were written from Rome, and in 1874 she published a volume of prose, "Old Acquaintance (Brotherton) |Old Acquaintance," and fifteen years ago a volume of verse, "Rosemary for Remembrance," which were both deservedly successful. In her long life Mrs. Brotherton had made many friends, among them Lord Tennyson, his eldest brother, Mr. ”
