The need to establish international collaborations may, in particular, apply in the context of sharing students, given the enormous differences in student numbers among the different national research communities. It is usually considered professionally advantageous to spend some time abroad during the early stages of a research career (when funding for such exchanges is fairly easily obtained) , thus making exchanges of students and junior scientists a particularly interesting vehicle by which to establish international research collaborations.
