John O'Mahony,  The Sunny Side of Ireland

“ Inlet of Bantry Bay. Well wooded, mild climate, winter resort beyond compare. Gulf Stream strikes coast in vicinity. Excellent hotel accommodation. Good cottage accommodation. Plenty coaching and boating facilities in summer; splendid sea bathing. Arbutus grows wild.
KENMARE.—One of the starting-points for the Grand Atlantic Coast Drive. Thriving pleasant town at the head of the fiord. Macgillicuddy Reeks stand out behind the town. Mountain climbers will make ascent best from point beyond Sohaleen Bridge. Both the Cork and Kerry sides of the bay are very beautiful and worthy of investigation.

“ Shoal of Whales.Bantry Bay has been the scene of great excitement, high enjoyment, and most valuable occupation to the people of this locality, this week, in consequence of a very large shoal of whales- grampus species- which entered that harbour on Monday, and found their way to the romantic bay of Glengariff" on Tuesday-the evening of which day found all kinds of boats, weapons, and missiles in requisition for the attack on the herd. ”

M. F. Mansfield,  Romantic Ireland; volume 2/2

“ The great Atlantic waves beat against the wild rocks of the south Irish coast; but the Gulf Stream gives warmth of an almost subtropical mildness to the fresh sea air, and the lowlands are enriched by the soft rains which wash the hills and fall into the great arms of the sea, called Bantry Bay, Kenmare River, and Dingle Bay.
Farther north is the ample estuary of the river Shannon and Galway Bay, each with much the same characteristics. To take a steamer from Cork for a tour of the southwest coast will form a unique experience in the itinerary of most folk.
