“ Jack, Fred, Spouter and Fatty can stay at the door and argue with Codfish and Wesley just as hard as possible so as to keep ’em interested. In the meanwhile, Randy and Gif and I can go around and get on the fire escape that runs under their window. Most likely their window is open and we’ll be able to sneak into the room. ”

“ In the singles Fred was victorious over Billy Sands and Jack came in ahead of Paul Halliday. In the doubles Spouter and Andy lost to Ted Maxwell and another of the Longley boys, while Gif and Randy won with ease over the lad known as Fiddler and Codfish. ”

“ Tony Duval realized that he was outnumbered and that the boys from Cedar Lodge meant business. He grumbled a good deal and talked in a whisper with Werner and Glutts. In the meanwhile, Codfish hurriedly gathered together his few belongings, and presently announced that he was ready to leave.
"Now, one thing more," said Gif, turning to the two bullies. "Don't you dare to show your faces anywhere near Cedar Lodge again. If you come on our property, you come at your own peril." ”

“ Among other persons I brought letters to Gifford, the satirist, but never saw him till yesterday. Never was I so mistaken in my anticipations. Instead of a tall and handsome man, as I had supposed him from his pictures, a man of severe and bitter remarks in conversation, such as I had good reason to believe him from his books, I found him a short, deformed, and ugly little man, with a large head sunk between his shoulders, and one of his eyes turned outward, but withal one of the best-natured, most open, and well-bred gentlemen I have met. ”

“ Then at half-past two the dismissal bell rang, and the cadets rushed hither and thither in their anxiety to pack and get away.
“Look at the autos outside, will you?” came from Gif Garrison, who had stopped to speak to Jack about the proposed trip with Ralph Mason. “I’ll say some fellows are in luck.”
“Yes, indeed!” came from Dick Powell, usually called Spouter by his chums. “I’d rather ride in an auto ten times over than in a stuffy train. Just think of rolling along through the country with all the foliage at its very best. ”

“ Jack set the pace, and his three cousins kept stroke with him in a fashion that could not help but win approval.
“Come on, fellows! We’ve got to beat ’em!” cried Gif Garrison to his rowing mates. “Pull now, and make every stroke tell!”
“We are not as well matched up as they are,” panted Ned Lowe, who was by far the poorest rower of the bunch. “Those Rovers have been rowing together ever since they came to the Hall.”

“Don’t growl, Ned! Row!” returned the leader, and then the cadets in the second boat did their best to outstrip their rivals. ”

“ AT THE BUNGALOW
The uproar in the kitchen was so terrific that all the boys in the living room of the bungalow leaped to their feet in alarm.
“I’s killed! I’s killed!” roared Jeff. “I’s stung to death!” and, with a clattering of a kettle on the floor, the colored man came dashing into the living room flourishing a frying pan in one hand.
“What is it, Jeff? What has happened?” questioned Gif.
“It’s a snake! A great big long snake! Right on the shelf over the stove!” wailed Jeff. He dropped the frying pan on the floor. “He done stung me on the hand and on the arm! I’s a dead man!” ”

“ This was what the majority desired, and before Glutts and the others could recover from their astonishment and dismay Gif and his crowd were down the slope.
"Huh! so you were the fellows to roll those snowballs down on us," growled Bill Glutts, as he rubbed his leg where some of the hot coffee had been spilled upon it.
"That's a fine way to treat a fellow," said Werner, digging some snow from his ear.
"And you spoiled all the lunch!" wailed Codfish, looking around for his cap, which had been knocked off. "Oh dear! ”

“ The light was lit in the room and by this, peering cautiously over the window sill, the cadets outside saw Codfish and Wesley standing close to the locked door, each with a baseball bat in [91] his hands. Both were arguing loudly with those in the corridor.
“I don’t think they’ll notice us,” whispered Andy. “Everybody is talking too loud. Come on now. Grab the bats first of all. And you, Gif, try to get to the door and unlock it.” ”

“ Arouse thee, Gifford! be thy promise claim'd,
Make bad men better, or, at least, ashamed.
One curious peculiarity Gifford had. He made his old housekeeper sit in his study doing her needlework whilst he was engaged on his literary labours. To the end he maintained a warm friendship with Dr. Ireland, Dean of Westminster, son of a butcher of Ashburton, and a schoolfellow in former days, and when he died he bequeathed to him his library.
"The last month of Gifford's life was but a slow dying," says Mr. Smiles. ”

“ It will help to warm us up.”
Thereupon the seven cadets fell to eating, and soon every particle of the scanty breakfast furnished 50 to them had disappeared. They grumbled, however, as they ate, and continued to grumble after the repast was finished.
“I’m quite sure Colonel Colby wouldn’t treat us like this,” declared Gif.
“He certainly did much better by Fred and me when we were placed in the guardroom,” declared Jack. “We got as good a meal as we ever had served to us in the mess hall.”
“It’s nothing short of a crime not to turn the heat on,” said Fred, who was examining the radiator again. ”

“ Then a little later they went “Under Canvas” with their fellow cadets, and later still went on a grand hunt, using a bungalow up in the woods which belonged to Gif Garrison’s uncle. This was during the great World War and when the older Rovers had all gone to France to fight for democracy.
The return of the older Rovers brought a surprise. [17] Dick Rover had saved the life of a man from Texas and in return had received a deed to some land which later on was supposed to contain oil. Dick decided to go to Texas and Oklahoma, and the four boys begged to go with him. ”

“ As Giffard stood trembling, while he relieved his Lord from this hapless burthen, her father had to unloose her hand from the side of his coat, which she had caught fast hold of as she fell, and grasped so closely, it was with difficulty released.--On attempting to take the hand away he trembled--faltered--then bade Giffard do it.
"Who, I, my Lord! I separate you!" cried he. But recollecting himself, "My Lord, I will obey your commands whatever they are." And seizing her hand, pulled it with violence--it fell--and her father went away. ”

“ His disregard for external show was the more remarkable, as a contrary feeling is generally observable in persons who have risen from penury to wealth. But Gifford was a gentleman in feeling and in conduct, and you were never led to suspect he was sprung from an obscure origin except when he reminded you of it by an anecdote relative to it. And this recalls one of the stories he used to tell with irresistible drollery, the merit of which entirely depended on his manner. ”

“ Keep back like the rest of us."
"That's just what I say," broke out Spouter.
Realizing that the others were in the majority, Slugger Brown kept his distance from the pair who were fighting. Codfish was trembling like a leaf, and cowered well in the background.
Around and around circled the two contestants, and for a few minutes neither of them seemed to have the advantage. Jack was hit in the arm, and returned by landing another blow, this time on Nappy's chest. Then the big youth aimed a kick at the Rover boy's stomach.
"Hi! that's no way to fight!" cried Gif, indignantly. ”

“ GIFFEN, Sir ROBERT (1837–1910) , economist and statistician, born at Strathaven, Lanarkshire, on 22 July 1837, was younger son of Robert Giffen, a small merchant and an elder of the presbyterian church, by his wife Janet Wiseman. Robert was educated at the village school and was put in charge of the Sunday-school library with an elder brother, John, who, destined for the ministry, died prematurely of consumption. The boys read all the books they could find, and wrote anonymously short articles and poems for a Hamilton newspaper. In 1850 Robert was apprenticed to a lawyer in Strathaven. ”

“ GIFFORD, ADAM, Lord Gifford (1820–1887) , lord of session and founder of the Gifford lectureships, eldest son of James Gifford and his wife, Catherine Ann West, was born at Edinburgh on 29 Feb. 1820. His father, who had risen from a comparatively humble position, became treasurer and master of the Merchant Company, an elder in the Secession church, and a zealous Sunday-school teacher. His mother was vigorous in body and mind, and a very independent thinker. ”

"What!" cried the gipsy, "to be taken and thrust into a prison! Do you not know that they are pursuing me on a charge of murder--pursuing me as if I were a wolf? Have you not, yourself, been sending out men to take the murderer Pharold?" ”

Pharold paused, and one of the other gipsies whispered a word in his ear. "True!" he said, "true! as he has to wander far and long, he must not go unprovided. We will all contribute to help him." ”

“ Nay, more, I have often heard my brother declare, that he would not take what he offered. But, as I have said, Colonel Manners, all other considerations apart, my word is pledged, and he shall go free."
"Noble heart! noble heart!" cried the gipsy. "On my hand rests not one drop of innocent blood, as there is a God above the stars! Neither do I fear death nor dread inquiry; but my liberty is more than my life, and what should I do, for months, a prisoner among stone walls and the vermin of the earth! ”

“ The peer surveyed him, as he entered, with the keen eye of worldly experience, and saw that he was a man to be depended on by those who could pay him well.
