Nichols

“ NICHOLS, WILLIAM (1655–1716) , Latin poet, born in 1655, was son of the Rev. Henry Nichols or Nicols of Hilton, near Cowbridge, Glamorganshire. He matriculated at Oxford, from Christ Church as a ‘poor scholar’ on 14 April 1671, and graduated B.A. on 24 March 1674–5, M.A. in 1677 (Foster, Alumni Oxon. 1500–1714, iii. 1070) . On 4 June 1690 he was presented to the rectory of Cheadle, Cheshire, but resigned it on his appointment to the rectory of Stockport in the same county on 24 March 1693–4. ”

“ J. T. G. Nichols, so long the beloved pastor of the Unitarian parish in Saco, Maine, was then a student of Divinity at Cambridge. He had engaged to assist in a Sunday School in the East Cambridge jail, and all the women, twenty in number, had been assigned to him. The experience of one session with his class was enough to convince him that a young man was very much out of place in that position and that a woman, sensible if possible, but a woman certainly, was necessary. His mother advised him to consult Miss Dix. ”

“ Nichols’s rank as a literary antiquary is manifested by many able and elaborate works. As he declined in life, his active duties gradually and naturally devolved on his successor: may that gentleman live as long in health and wealth, and be remembered with as high honour, as his revered father. ”

“ Nichols's important literary work began in 1775, when he edited an additional volume of Swift's ‘Works,’ which was followed by ‘A Supplement to Dr. Swift's Works, with Explanatory Notes,’ in two volumes, in 1776 and 1779. In 1776 he edited the ‘Original Works’ of William King, D.C.L. [q. v.] , in three volumes. In these, as in several subsequent undertakings, Nichols received considerable assistance from Isaac Reed, who, like Richard Gough, Dr. Richard Farmer, Dr. Birch, Dr. Parsons, Warton, Sir John Pringle, and others, had already been attracted by the young man's antiquarian tastes. ”

“ So they had breakfast, and so began the queer companionship of Charles Strickland and Captain Nichols.
They must have spent something like four months at Marseilles in one another's society. Their career was devoid of adventure, if by adventure you mean unexpected or thrilling incident, for their days were occupied in the pursuit of enough money to get a night's lodging and such food as would stay the pangs of hunger. Cron shook his head. "Too dangerous. If that Nichols girl should escape——"
"That's where we made a big mistake," Lynch cut in. "We shouldn't have left anything to chance."
"It's certain enough," Cron laughed harshly. "She may be a smart girl, but she's not smart enough to get out of that closet." ”

“ Another Thomas Nichols (fl. 1554) , a London merchant, went about 1554 to the Canary Islands as factor for Thomas Lok [see under Lok, Sir William] , Anthony Hickman, and Edward Castelin, ‘who in those days were worthie merchants and of great credit in London’ [cf. art. Nicholas, Thomas] . Nichols spent seven years in the islands, and after returning home found so many errors in Andrew Thevet's ‘New founde Worlde,’ which appeared in an English translation from the French in 1568, that he placed his own observations briefly on record. ”

“ In a congested portion of the city they drew up to the curbing, waiting for Christopher Nichols who rode with his daughter in a dark sedan.
Jerome Davis, in charge of the raid, came over to speak to the detective.
"Everything is all set, Mr. Nichols. We have the entire neighborhood bottled up. Every alley and street guarded."
"Good. And the Hamilton building?"
"It is surrounded. At exactly eleven my men will raid both places. It's a cinch we'll get Rap Molberg and his gang this time." ”

“ Masterbrook hard at work. She had cleaned up all the rooms, and she came out to the car to help carry in the groceries.
"The electric company man was here while you were gone," she told Mr. Nichols. "The lights are on now."
"Fine," replied the detective. "And how about our supply of wood?"
"Herman sent over enough for today and to-morrow. He said he'd get busy and cut more. But I'd not count on it. Herman is as lazy as all get out."
Mr. Nichols laughed and told the housekeeper that he and Penny were going for a little walk before lunch. ”

“ Nichols examined the cloth very closely and then compared it with the wick of the toy lantern.
"The material looks exactly the same to me, Dad!" Penny declared excitedly.
"It is identical," her father agreed. "Where did you say you bought the goods?"
"At Hunters Store. Unfortunately, every woman in Kendon seems to have bought this same material."
Mr. Nichols reached for his hat. "I'm going down there now and talk with the storekeeper," he declared.
"Then you think the clue is important, Dad."
"Yes, I do, Penny. It may not lead to anything, but one can never be sure." ”

“ The gambler continued to smile blandly, refusing to take offense. "I admit I've never hired you on a job of my own," he said. "But many a time a guy has said to me 'Who is the best private dick in town?' and I says 'Chris Nichols,' just like that. It has brought you some nice jobs."
"I don't believe I've ever taken any case through your influence, Max Lynch. But that's neither here nor there. What's on your mind?"
The gambler moved forward in his chair.
"Well, Nichols, it's like this. Dutch O'Neil is in the jug for pasting a dude customer of mine over at my casino last night. ”

“ All the while the little Cuban talked swiftly and with a saturnine enthusiasm. He passed the wine rapidly.
“My own countrymen!” Nichols shouted. “Never! I shot a Yankee lieutenant—Allen he was—with my own hand. That’s another thing. I’m not a man to trifle with. No, sir. Don’t you try it.... Why, I’ve papers that would hang O’Brien. I sent them home to Halifax. I know a trick worth his. By God, let him try it! Let him only try it. He dursen’t give me up....”
The man in livery came in to snuff the candles. Nichols sprang from his seat in a panic and drew his knife with frantic haste. ”

“ Suddenly Nichols stopped. Pointing to a mark on the ground, he exclaimed—
"Someone has stepped here lately. A man in stockinged feet."
"That's right," cried Laurence; "the Indian does not wear boots."
"And never will," replied the coachman grimly. "His body and the hounds have gone down, down into the marsh. See, here is the mark of one of the [Pg 243] hounds. They have all gone down together. Oh, Lord, how awful, and all my fault!"
"No, not your fault, Nichols. You couldn't help the hounds escaping. They scented the Indian, and for some reason or other started in pursuit. ”

“ Nichols relates of him that “being quick to discern and willing to encourage merit,” he sent to school a clever boy, John Clarke (son of a mechanic in his parish) , who became M.A. and Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge, and was successively master of the schools of Shipton, Beverley, and Wakefield. ”

“ In the third volume of the Penny Nichols’ series, entitled, “The Secret of the Black Imp,” she encounters a mystery more baffling than any she has previously solved.
After Mrs. Leeds and her daughter left the house, the others took Mr. Nichols for a tour of the secret passageway. Jacob Winters explained in detail how the panel operated and entertained them by playing several selections on the pipe organ.
“I love music,” Rosanna remarked wistfully. “I’ve never even had an opportunity to learn to play the piano.” ”

“ Gallup came from the kitchen with a tray of sandwiches and a tall pitcher of fruit juice. For a time Penny and her father confined their talk to less vital subjects. But when the housekeeper had gone from the room again, Mr. Nichols took up the matter where it had been dropped.
"If my raids tomorrow night are successful, it will end the case. We may need you, Penny, to show the officers how to get into the Hamilton building."
"I'd like to help," she assured him eagerly.
"Good," Mr. Nichols said warmly as he picked up the evening paper. "Until the appointed hour, don't go near the Plant. ”

“ Hearing himself addressed as Nichols was a distinct shock to the boy, but to be taken for the son of the vice-president of the railroad completely dumfounded him, and for a moment he was on the point of denying the assumption. ”

“ The fruit of this marriage was two sons and one daughter, neither of whom is now living. His present wife has two living children. He has an humble home of his own.
Mr. Nichols is a man of energy, industry and decision of character; he has opinions and has the courage to express them. No man has any trouble in times of controversy to locate him, and yet in his rulings as presiding officer of the above named association, the writer has seen evidences of prudence and commendable flexibility. ”

“ At the heavy black table, in the light of a single candle, the Cuban and the Nova Scotian were discussing, their heads close together.
“I tell you no,” Nichols was saying in a fluent, abominable, literal translation into Spanish. “Take the knife so... thumb upwards. Stab down in the soft between the neck and the shoulder-blade. You get right into the lungs with the point. I’ve tried it: ten times. Never stick the back. The chances are he moves, and you hit a bone. There are no bones there. It’s the way they kill pigs in New Jersey.” ”

“ Nichols and the girls arrived. The detective stopped him, explaining that they would like to have his company on a motor trip to a distant town.
"I don't enjoy changing a tire at night," Mr. Nichols said. "While I'm not looking for trouble, I'd like to have a handy man along just in case something happens."
"I'll be very glad to go, sir," replied Michael.
"You might be getting the car from the garage," Mr. Nichols directed. "I'll be along in a minute."
He started for the cottage after his light overcoat. Mrs. Masterbrook sat rocking back and forth on the porch. ”

“ Kirmenbach. "What would a jewel thief—a grown man be doing with a toy lantern?"
"It does appear a bit unusual," Mr. Nichols admitted, "but I feel certain there is a logical explanation."
"I have great faith in your ability, Mr. Nichols," said Mr. Kirmenbach. "However, I must say that I am unable to see where this clue will lead."
"At the moment I have no idea myself," replied the detective, smiling. "But I think that this may develop into something."
He declined to amplify his statement further, and a few minutes later left the house with Penny. They drove slowly back toward Knob Hill. ”

“ For very shame’s sake, the guests were hurriedly talking to cover the sounds of strife.
“Harrington’s trip evidently hasn’t done him much good,” said Nichols to Atterbury. “I doubt his success. He has too many large schemes on hand; what he makes in one way he uses to float something else.” ”

“ Nichols did not, however, allow himself to be crushed by his misfortunes. He had already lost 5,000l. by the ‘History of Leicestershire,’ but he felt that he was in honour bound to complete the work (Lit. Illustr. vi. 588–90) . In 1809 he edited, in two volumes, ‘Letters on various subjects to and from William Nicholson, D.D., successively Bishop of Carlisle and of Derry, and Archbishop of Cashel;’ published an enlarged edition of the ‘Epistolary Correspondence of Sir Richard Steele’ (afterwards giving the manuscript letters to the British Museum) ”

“ Nichols politely. "You think that he has met with a mishap?"
"Yes, that is my belief," returned Mr. Madden gravely. "Mr. Kline gave me to understand that his mission here was a dangerous one. If something had not gone wrong I know I should have heard of him before this."
"Whom did your friend plan to visit here?"
"I don't know," the visitor admitted. "Mr. Kline was very secretive."
"Have you inquired for him in the village?"
"Yes, no one has heard of the man. It is all very bewildering."
"Are you actually sure that he came to Kendon?" inquired Mr. Nichols. ”

“ There are countries, I am told, where you would be sure to prosper. That viper Nichols, I remember, once offered to assist—I could never make out from what motive—from what—A little wine," he added feebly. "The evening, for the time of the year, is very chilly: my feet and legs are cold as stones." He swallowed the wine, and again addressed himself to speak, but his voice was scarcely audible. "I have often thought," he murmured, "as I lay here, that Symons, Nichols's clerk, from a hint he dropped, knows something of—of—your mother and—and—" The faint accents ceased to be audible ”

“ NICHOLS, JAMES (1785–1861) , printer and theological writer, was born at Washington, Durham, 6 April 1785. Owing to family losses he had to work in a factory at Holbeck, Leeds, from the age of eight to twelve, but studied the Latin grammar in spare moments. His father was afterwards able to send him to Leeds grammar school. Nichols was for some time a private tutor, and subsequently entered into business as a printer and bookseller at Briggate, Leeds. ”
