Annie Carter Cochran,  Robert Carter: His Life and Work… (1891)

“ Robert Carter, New York: Dear Sir,—Your friends and associates in the book-publishing and book-selling trade of this city desire, on the fiftieth anniversary of your entrance upon the business, to convey to you their best regards and congratulations.
Some of us are the sons and successors of your early contemporaries; others are the representatives of a later generation; but the good will and kindly feeling which you commanded at the beginning, you have continued to retain through all the succeeding years of an honorable career.

Miriam Haynie,  The Stronghold: A Story of Historic Northern Neck of Virginia and Its People

“ THE KING OF THE NORTHERN NECK
Robert Carter was born to be a king among men. His fellow countrymen called him "King" and his real name was eventually forgotten. Like King Midas, everything that King Carter [Pg 98] touched turned to gold, but in the case of the latter there was no magic in it—he planned it that way and worked to make his plans succeed.
Robert Carter was the second son of John, the immigrant and Indian fighter. His mother was Sarah Ludlow Carter, his father's fourth wife.
Robert Carter was born in 1663, at his father's plantation, Corotoman, in Lancaster County.

“ Robert Carter, one of the founders of the New York Sabbath Committee, and the last survivor but one of its original members, the Committee desires to record the great respect and affection with which Mr. Carter has always been regarded by his associates, our grateful recollection of the wise counsels and generous contributions with which he has unfailingly sustained the Committee’s work, and our heartfelt praise to God for the peaceful end with which the long life of His servant has now been crowned. ”
