Various,  The Fantasy Fan, Volume 1, Number 12…

“ Shelley's "Frankenstein" was the only one of the rival narratives to be brought to an elaborate completion; and criticism has failed to prove that the best parts are due to Shelley rather than to her. The novel, somewhat tinged but scarcely marred by moral didacticism, tells of the artificial human being moulded from charnel fragments by Victor Frankenstein, a young Swiss medical student. Created by its designer "in the mad pride of intellectuality," the monster possesses full intelligence but owns a hideously loathsome form. ”

Edmund Callis Berkeley,  Giant brains; or, Machines that think (1949)

“ Perhaps the first study of the consequences of a machine that thinks is a prophetic novel called Frankenstein, written more than a hundred years ago, in 1818. The author, then only 21 years old, was Mary W. Godwin, who became the wife of the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley.
According to the story, a young Swiss, an ardent student of physiology and chemistry, Victor Frankenstein, finds the secret of life. He makes an extremely ugly, clever, and powerful monster, with human desires. Frankenstein promptly flees from his laboratory and handiwork.

Mary Shelley,  Frankenstein (1818)

“ “Come, Victor; not brooding thoughts of vengeance against the assassin, but with feelings of peace and gentleness, that will heal, instead of festering, the wounds of our minds. Enter the house of mourning, my friend, but with kindness and affection for those who love you, and not with hatred for your enemies.
“Your affectionate and afflicted father,
“Alphonse Frankenstein.
