Louis Golding,  Forward from Babylon

“ All life was a fight, was a movement forward, away from the darkness into the places of light. He had forsworn himself. He had fallen back into Babylon. The dark was closing round him and the pitchy waters were gurgling in his throat.
There was a whisper beside him.
"Philip, Philip, it's Channah!"
Who was Channah? A girl, a sister. She had a rolled gold brooch with two holes where diamonds should have been. One of her boots was very worn at the heel.
"Go away, go away! I don't want you!"
"Philip, poor old kid, I'm so sorry! Mother's crying her heart out! Listen, Philip!

Louis Golding,  Shepherd Singing Ragtime, and Other Poems

“ Such song as no birds achieve,
Though nightingale may grieve,
And lyric thrush may scold,
And blackbird make so bold
As to declare this silver and his own song gold.
Who are these whose singings here
Compass the noon with splendour, but my heart with fear,
Lest I, unworth this height,
Drop through narrowing deeps of unplumbed night?
Lo! the dead poets they
Who passed through flesh this way,
These with no lips of clay
Now sing supremest song throughout the duskless day.
In the music now they make
My own few notes forsake
My heart that rocks in silence as a lone bird on a lake.

Louis Golding,  Sorrow of War: Poems

“ Such purposeless and iron wings
Obscure our mortal music quite?
Such gloom to monstrous gloom outflings
The stenches of a churchyard night?
We are no more for God or Sin
Than parasites in rotting hair,
No different but only in
The boundlessness of our despair?
Glories have sprung before our gaze
From the wet wood the grey tide warps!
We have heard peals of music blaze
Sheer from the cold heart of a corpse!
GHOST AND BODY
I that am wiser than most,
Have yielded the tract of my ghost
To a panting and flat-eyed ghost who gathers these useless things.
