When she and Bethson fell in love she had been not only a beauty but a fashionable beauty. Fashion is usually open to superlatives, and Lila's beauty was as much cajoled and run after as a great fortune is supposed to be. Splendid marriages were offered to her on both sides of the Atlantic. It was her misfortune that she fell in love with Bethson. She did not want to love him. Young as she was, life seemed to her such a cruel game that she demanded all the distractions of material luxury and success to keep her from looking at things as they are.
