Three weeks later, Marlow found himself in a steaming town on the coast of the mainland one hundred and sixty miles to the north of the Orisquibo. There he outfitted. He guarded his tongue against mention of the Orisquibo. Laval's talk of Madame DeSalberry had made so powerful and sinister an impression on his mind that he half suspected every man he met of being an agent of hers. At first he had thought of her as a meddlesome and grasping old woman who had somehow or other blinded that decent little chap Laval to her real character and game.
