“ Cartwright gave a little hopeless sort of laugh to herself as she threw upon him that quick glance that seemed to be not looking.
He put on his coat (at her orders) , his flyer's coat with the wide collar that made his head seem even smaller and the oval of his face more perfect as it rested against the fur. That young, young face topping the athlete's body that towered above her own, that spring and lilt of his walk had never before made such appeal to the sense of physical beauty that was in her. ”

“ Fanny Mowbray started, but recovering herself, said, "Mr. Cartwright, give me leave to introduce my friend Miss Mary Richards to you. She is one of your parishioners, and one that you will find capable of appreciating the happiness of being so."
Mr. Cartwright extended his pastoral hand to the young lady with a most gracious smile.
"Bless you both!" said he, joining their hands between both of his. "To lead you together in the path in which we must all wish to go, would be a task that might give a foretaste of the heaven we sought!" ”

“ The finest of all Cartwright's poems is here—the magnificent "Song of Dalliance"—beginning, "Hark, my Flora! Love doth call us." It is ascribed to Cartwright in the unique miscellany (preserved in the Bodleian) , Sportive Wit: the Muses' Merriment, 1656, but is not printed in his Works. Cartwright had a great reputation among his contemporaries. "My son, Cartwright," said Ben Jonson, "writes all like a man." "Cartwright was the utmost man could come to" in the opinion of that excellent prelate, Bishop Fell. All the wits of the age paid tributes to his memory. ”

“It is forbidden to enter the theatre through the saloon of artistes,” said the small man pompously. “If Miss O’Grady is your friend, you must wait for her until the performance is over.”
Cartwright took no notice. He was a tall man of athletic build and shouldering his way past the others with no difficulty, he tapped on the panel. ”

“ I was present when Major Cartwright opened a letter from Sir Francis, which had come from Leicestershire. I thought the kind-hearted old Major would have dropped upon the floor! I shall never forget his looks as he read that letter. "The schoolteacher—he plugged a feller named Quade. Sinclair got him clean away from Sheriff Kern." ”

“ Cartwright disputed like a great, Preston like a gentile scholar, being a handsome man; and the Queen, upon a parity of deserts, always preferred properness of person in conferring her favours. Hereupon, with her looks, words, and deeds she favoured Preston, calling him her scholler, as appears by his epitaph in Trinity Hall chappell. ”

“ Cartwright slowly descended from the rostrum.
“It is not part of my professional ambition to leap into a net,” he faltered.
“Leap!” echoed Eliphalet wildly. “Leap! Dare you employ such a word? I have seen a tile fall from a roof with more grace. I have seen a blind man stumble on a banana-skin with greater dignity. But a more pitiable craven-hearted exhibition than yours I—I——” Words failed him. “You have ruined my belief in the younger generation—you have shattered my belief in myself. Manning, Manning! ”

“ The girl nodded.
“He spoke about you,” she said; “he called you Benson—is that your real name?”
“It is good enough,” said Cartwright.
“It is queer,” mused the girl, looking at him thoughtfully, “that I never meet any of your friends in Paris, and that nobody knows you—by name. I went down to your flat on the Avenue of the Grand Army,” she confessed frankly, “and asked the concierge. You’re Benson there too.”
Cartwright chuckled.
“In my business,” he said, “it is necessary that one should be discreet. The name which goes in London is not good enough for Paris. And vice versa,” he added. ”

“ What canon of cleanliness, now lost, did Cartwright possess, which enabled him to pronounce Fletcher, or indeed himself, purer than Shakspeare, and his times ‘nicer’ than those of James? To our generation, less experienced in the quantitative analysis of moral dirt, they will appear all equally foul. ”

“ Secrets the human race never has suspected. Remaking the human civilization almost overnight."
"And you," said West, "right at the center, pulling all the strings."
"So," said Cartwright.
"I want a few to pull myself."
Nevin held up his hand. "Just a minute, Mr. West. We would like to know just how—"
Cartwright laughed at him. "Forget it, Louis. He knew about your painting. He had Annabelle. Where do you suppose he found out?"
"But—but—" said Nevin.
"Maybe he didn't use a painting," Cartwright declared. "Maybe he used other methods. After all, there are others, you know. ”

“ Cartwright picked up the bill.
“T. A. C. Anderson,” he read. “What does T. A. C. stand for—‘Take A Chance’?”
“I understood he was named after you—Timothy Alfred Cartwright,” said the secretary.
“Yes; of course,” Cartwright grinned. “Still, Take A Chance isn’t a bad name for a kid. When is he arriving?” ”

“ Above all things Cartwright manifested a due sense of the ingratitude he had been guilty of towards so good a master as the gentleman whom he robbed had been to him, he therefore prayed for his prosperity, even with his last breath, and declared he died without malice or ill-will against any person whatsoever. ”

“ He is a Spaniard—do you speak Spanish?”
“A little,” she admitted, “but it is precious little!”
“It doesn’t matter,” Cartwright shook his head. “He speaks English very well. Now, this land is absolutely valueless to the man, but every attempt I have made to buy it has been unsuccessful, and it is vitally necessary at this moment, when I am floating a company to develop the property, that his claims should be included in my properties.”
“What is his name?” asked the girl.
“Brigot,” replied Cartwright.
“Brigot?” repeated Sadie O’Grady thoughtfully. “I seem to have heard that name before.” ”

“ The other business doesn’t seem decent——”
“Ten thousand pounds!” murmured Cartwright.
“It is a lot,” agreed the girl, “but how am I coming out of this business? I come out hopelessly compromised.”
Cartwright shrugged his shoulders with a deprecating smile.
“My dear girl——” he began.
“Wait a moment,” she said quietly; “let’s have a clear understanding. You don’t expect me to walk up to Señor Brigot the first time I meet him, or even the second, and say: ‘You’ve a very nice property. What will you sell it for?’ That is not the kind of transaction you expect me to conduct, is it?” ”
