“ Whack. "You're the first young man that's come to me for weeks that I have been able to hear above all the racket in New York. And I want to tell you," he pursued, "I like to talk business with nervy young fellows. ..." Here he poked me slyly. "Oh, I'm onto the trick you played me!"
I was relieved that he was not offended by the way I had come at him again in my sudden disguise.
"That old chap with the side-whiskers that came around to me this morning with the same proposition—same name as yours, too. Well, with all due respect, I can't stand those male spinsters. ”

“ The youth, stepping aside with a quickness marvelous considering the size of his frame, avoided the charge. As Dynamo tore past him, he struck out—a mighty lash—with the halter. The bull tore on until he smashed into a prune tree. The green fruit flew like water splashing from a stone; and Dynamo checked his course, turned again, began to paw and challenge as the preliminary to another charge.
“Oh, let him go—please!” cried Eleanor. Whether he heard her or not made little difference to the youth. ”

“ He stood square before her. “Let’s go crazy.”
“Oh, Lance!” she cried, springing up, magically equipped with spiritual roller skates.
“There’s an awful old horse out in the pasture—that is, if the crows haven’t got him. His name’s Jasper. He’s a bewitched horse and goes perfectly grand with a magic surrey.”
“The very one you drove when you visited us at Stockington! ” She clapped her hands.
“Just leave him alone, and he’ll take you to Arcadia every time. But today I’ve got business at Great Barrington—regular whopping business—”
“And I’m going too.” ”

“ Tiffany, from her nasturtium bower in the shadow of the great oak.
“Just when we are getting comfortable,” her husband growled pleasantly; and he made no move to rise. The women sat at ease about the tea-table. Their talk, beginning with the marvelous Ruggles babies, had run lightly past clothes and help, and fallen into the hands of Mrs. Goodyear. She, too, was full of San Francisco. Apart, under the grape arbor, Teresa Morse and her brother were snaring lizards—playing like two well-behaved babies miraculously grown tall.
“There’s Eleanor,” suddenly spoke Teresa. ”

“ And now, in this first year of the new century, the historic cup is refilled and tossed off in a radiant toast to Erato by Wallace Irwin.
The attribute of modernity is not given to every new age. The cogs in the wheels of time slip back, at times. The classic revival may be permeated with enthusiasm, but it is a second edition of an old work—not a virile essay at expression of living thought. ”

“ I have stolen this morning—would you rob me in turn?"
"It will be the first kiss of a million," he said.
"It will be the last forever," she answered. "But remember, if you do not kiss me, no man ever shall."
He busied himself with guiding the automobile; it was no time to hurl out the intense things which he had to say. But when they had entered the smooth park driveway, he came out with it:
"Do you think that I respect that obstacle? Can you think that I believe such moonshine even if you do? And do you suppose that I am going to let Aunt Paula keep you now?" ”

“ And the Banquet Hall remained deserted, lonely, empty, yet it was neither dark nor lifeless. Stronger and stronger grew the flood of light that burned roseate toward the zenith as the sun came up. It penetrated to every corner of the room, and the drops of wine left in the bottom of the glasses flashed like jewels in the radiance. From without, from the city's streets, came the murmur of increasing activity. Through the night it had droned on, like the low-pitched diapason of some vast organ, but now as the sun rose, it swelled in volume. Louder it grew and ever louder. ”

“ When Bertram left, Mrs. Tiffany did not follow him to the door, as was her old-fashioned custom. He waited a moment, as though expecting something. His eyes were on Eleanor. She did not move. She only bade him a simple and easy good night over her shoulder.
The old couple sat for a long time before the fire. Eleanor was gone—not to bed, could they but have known it, but to sit by her window and breathe bay-fragrance and drink the foggy night air off the Gate. ”

“ In an instant the great fight—the fight that would be told of in Iceland for hundreds of years to come—burst suddenly forth like the bursting of a dyke. Illugi had leaped forward, and through the smoke of the weltering fire his spear-blade flashed, curving like the curving leap of a salmon in the rapids of the Jokulsa. There was a cry, a rush of many feet, a parting of the group in the doorway, and Hialti Thinbeard's hands shut their death-grip upon the shaft of Illugi's spear as the blade of it tore out between his shoulders. ”

“ She stood a perfect phantom of the night, like Annette called back from the dead.
The pillar of dull light was moving now. She had stooped; he heard a faint creak, he imagined that he felt new air. Suddenly, too, a voice which had been droning far away became audible. And now the pillar of light was sinking, sinking through the floor. The feet were gone, the torso; the star of light was level with the floor, was gone. He was looking into darkness.
Mrs. Markham's controlled, vibrant voice rose clearly from below—he caught every word:
"Come, Helen; be strong. He loves you. ”

“ You suspect at once that the inhabitants of this room have inherited more blood than wealth, and would not be surprised to find that Mr Irwine had a finely-cut nostril and upper lip; but at present we can only see that he has a broad flat back and an abundance of powdered hair, all thrown backward and tied behind with a black ribbon—a bit of conservatism in costume which tells you that he is not a young man. ”

“ But had you observed the human unofficial, under-the-skin Pierre one November night as, in his public manner, he stood talking bad French to a group of servants just inside the florid door of Tanquay's dining-room, you would have seen that he was neither a contented nor a successful man. His deep-lined, homely face, more settled and worldly than of old, held the look of one who is mysteriously ashamed. In fact, Pierre, the waiter, was all very well; but Henry T. Brown, father of Norris Vanderhuyden Brown, had for these eight years been making weak excuses to his conscience. ”

“ Thrice the surf flung the log landward, thrice the undertow sucked it back. It was carried under the curve of a great hissing comber, disappeared, then rose dripping on the far side. The hag, bent upon her crutch, her toothless jaws fumbling and working, her gray hair streaming in the wind, fixed a glittering eye, malevolent, iniquitous, far out to sea where Drangey showed itself, a block of misty blue over the horizon's edge.
"A strong spell for a strong man," she muttered, "and an ill curse for an evil deed. ”

“ Yes sir, I was vain-like and let her think I was an actor."
"And she was disappointed to learn her husband was a valet?"
"Something awful! But it aint her so much I mind." The man's pose was drooping and awkward. "It's the baby. When I first looked at the little nipper lying there all bald and pink, something struck me hard, and I says: "No child of mine is ever going to be a servant or the son of a servant.' Maybe you'll understand, sir."
"Hand me my hat!" commanded Ronald Hild. "But what are you going to do, Henry?" ”

“ Bear after him on the jump. Muy pronto that grizzly came up awful sudden. The more he jerked the nearer he was to being choked. You better believe Mr. Puncher was hitting that trail right willing in the meanwhile."
"You talk too much with yore mouth," growled Irwin.
"It's a difference of opinion that makes horse races. I was just aiming to show you that if my friend hadn't happened to have a rope along he would have been in a bad fix. But, you notice, he used his brains, and a rope did just as well as a gun." ”

“ The victory of his smile on the staircase he followed up that evening to a general conquest. For Masters, when dinner was over, brewed a hot punch. They drank it about the driftwood fire, and even the severe Marion Slater relaxed and made merry. The essence of the gods strips self-control and delicacy first, so that the finer wit goes by without tribute of a laugh and the wit of poked fingers—especially if it be sauced by personality—rules at the board. ”

“ No faintest tremor of noise rose from the streets. The vast building itself had suddenly grown as soundless as the unplumbed depth of the sea. But Verrill shook himself; all evening fancies such as these had besieged him, even now they were prolonging the ordeal. Once this last toast drunk and he was released from his duty: He raised his glass again, and then in a loud clear voice he said:
"Gentlemen, I give you the toast of the evening." ”

“ Up from one side came Mrs. Tiffany; and from the other, where ran a road dividing the Tiffany orchard from the next, approached a buckboard driven by a lolling Portuguese. Beside him sat a girl all in brown, dust-resistant khaki, who curtained her face with a parasol. Mrs. Tiffany ran, light as an elderly fairy, down the rows.
“Eleanor!” she called.
“Dear, dear Aunt Mattie!” cried the girl. Judge Tiffany, too, was hurrying forward to the road. The youth had his hand on the ladder, prepared to mount, when the parasol dropped. ”

“ This minor joke, like every play of his spirit, gained a hundred times its own inherent effect by sifting through his personality. She smiled back to his smile at the boyish ripples about his mouth and eyes.
“You see, it means a lot when a girl sticks in a man’s mind that way,” he continued. “Why, I’ve carried you around right through my Senior year at college and my first year out. So of course, it must mean something.” 116
The open windows of Eleanor’s bower looked out upon a bay tree, a little thing awaiting its slaughter—for shade trees might not grow too near the windows in San Francisco. ”

“ Vagabond got into my system, and in my sophomore vacation I packed my kit and started out to be a hobo—art hobo, understand?”
“Thought so,” mused Lance.
“Thought what?” snapped his father, bilious eyes rolling.
“Oh, go on, Pop,” begged the son.
“Well, one day I walked up on a consumptive lad who was sitting by a pond slapping mosquitoes with one hand and painting with the other. Funny how we hit it off. His name was Moses—I always associated him with the Promised Land. So we hooked up and went rolling along, fishing, painting, stealing chickens like a pair of gypsies. ”

“ Annister hedged, "I want you to watch him closely. He's the most famous head-waiter in America."
"That will he amusing, wont it, Uncle Ced?" The boy's eyes were glued on the door, for all the waiters in the room whipped napkins over forearms like a comic-opera chorus awaiting the rise of the curtain. Pierre at the floor was gazing down the hall, and his watchers could see how the movement of his eyes presaged the coming event. Laughter could he heard afar, outside the great door at the opposite end of the room; then a company of evening-clad people brightened the Peacock Room. ”

“ A half-hour later we were seated at a small table, two empty glasses between us and the board liberally strewn with blue-prints, documents, and photographs. I paused, weary with speech, and mopped my brow. My heart was pounding wildly, for J. Whiffington Whack had just promised to take over the South Furia Pie-Dish enterprise at terms far better than I had ever dreamed of getting.
"I don't mind telling you," Mr. Whack assured me, as I sat folding up my documents, "you've got the manner that sells things in this generation—aggressive, self-assertive. You can't pussy-foot into success any more. ”

“ The doctor looked puzzled a moment; then—"Oh! you mean that club of yours," said he.
"Yes," said Verrill, "Great heavens! to think that I should be the last man after all—well, one of us had to be the last. And that's where the trouble is, Henry. It's been growing on me for the last two years—ever since Curtice died. He was the twenty-sixth. And he died only a month before the Annual Dinner. Arnold, Brill, Steve—Steve Sharrett, you know, and I—just the four,—were left then; and we sat down to that big table alone; and when we came to the toast of 'The Absent Ones' ... ”

“ Hild was plainly indignant. He was going to lose a precious slave that the world might gain a human being. Also the pathetic appeal in Henry's voice incensed him as something unsuitable to the wooden life of a valet.
"Henry," he said, and his voice was not encouraging. "I've looked after you for quite a while, and I think its my duty to tell you the plain truth about yourself. Don't harbor any foolish delusions about life. Do your job and do it well; that's all God or man can ask of you. As a servant you're a dignified, human item; as something else, you'd be a cipher. ”

“ Eleanor said nothing, but her expression was an invitation.
“Sure!” responded Bertram.
The Hotel Marseillaise had familiar customs of its own. For one thing, guests bothered the waiters as little as possible. Masters smiled when the two unconscious youths went back to their table, picked up the big soup tureen, their knives and forks, their plates, and transported them to the larger table.
They were dragging the lees of a rather squalid Bohemia, these two boys; a Bohemia the more real because they were unconscious in it. ”

“ On the extreme left of his range of vision he could see a set of dark portières; directly before him was a foolish little white desk, over which burned a gas jet, turned low. That, apparently, was the only illumination in the room. For the rest, he could only see a wall decorated with the tiny frivolities of a boudoir, two chairs, a sewing table. He watched until—his eyes, grown accustomed to the dim light—he discerned every detail. From far below, he heard the subdued hum of a conversation, and made out at length, in the rise and fall of voices, that a man and a woman were speaking. ”

“ The spoiled child kept straight ahead.
“They make real, ball-room gents,” he said. He turned toward Marion on this; turned as though he could not keep his look away. She lifted her eyebrow again, and he fell into a sulky silence.
The others rushed to the first refuge of tact—personalities. After a moment, Banks joined the talk; and then appeared another aspect of his perverse mood. He took the conversation into his own hands, and he talked of nothing which could by any chance include Bertram Chester, the callow newcomer, the outsider. ”
