Predella

Definition and stakes

Maud Cruttwell,  Luca Signorelli

“ The effect of the whole painting is of great splendour, the colours are of glowing depth, and the richness enhanced by the [Pg 93] low relief in gilded gesso of some of the brocades. But with all its state and dignity, perhaps the most important part of the altar-piece is the predella with its five beautiful pictures, flanked on either side by the arms of Arcevia. As colour these are remarkably fine and are treated with more care and less rapidity than Signorelli usually gave to predella work, while retaining the same breadth and freedom of general effect. ”

Portrait of Abby Sage Richardson Abby Sage Richardson,  Stories from Old English Poetry… (1899)

“ Prince Florizel, who was the heir and only son of Polixenes, was a romantic youth of twenty, who spent much of his time in wandering about the woods and fields of his father’s kingdom. It was not strange that he should hear of the radiant beauty of this peasant maid, who was called Perdita, and whose birth was so enveloped in mystery. It was not strange that the youth should seek to see her, to prove for himself if report had spoken truly. ”

Portrait of H. B. Marriott Watson H. B. Marriott Watson,  The Castle by the Sea — Chapter 20 (1909)

“ The awful moaning of the waters again filled the caverns. I fixed my thoughts on Perdita—Perdita in the light, Perdita with the sunshine playing on her bronze-gold hair, Perdita with her vivid rose face. I shut my eyes, as if to pretend that the darkness was only within me, and that the day was broad without, and the curtains of my vision parted and I saw Perdita. She was always in the light. ”
