Portrait of César Vallejo César Vallejo,  Prayer of the Road

“ The road turns blue, the river barks...
It lowers itself, this forehead, sweaty and cold,
ferocious and deformed. The broken pommel
of a humanicidal sword falls!
And the scraggy holy valley of gold,
the ember of sweat extinguishes in a cry!
There remains an odor of time cultivated with verses,
for shoots of consecrated marble that would inherit
the golden song
of the lark that rots in my heart!

Portrait of César Vallejo César Vallejo,  Village Woman

“ In the silent patio
the setting sun bleeds its farewell
The autumnal amber of the panorama
takes on a cold tint of aching gray.
At the gate of the house
which time has clawed full of holes
the calm silhouette
of a gold-colored ox,
appears silent
and later passes to the nearby stable,
yearning with his biblical puils,
hearing the oration of the cowbells,
for his virile years as a bull.
At the wall of the garden,
giving flight to the grief of his song,
springs the gentle rooster, and, in alert sadness,
like two teardrops,
his eyes tremble in the dead evening.

Portrait of César Vallejo César Vallejo,  Espergesia

“ I was born on a day
when God was sick.
Everyone knows that I live,
that I’m evil; and they don’t know
about the December of that January.
Since I was born on a day
when God was sick.
There’s a void
in my metaphysical air
that no one must feel:
the cloister of a silence
that spoke on the edge of a fire.
