“ Gladstone, when he became chancellor of the exchequer in December, made him a private secretary, and he performed his duties to the satisfaction of his chief, who remained his friend for life. Lawley gave up his Oxford fellowship in 1853. In May 1854 the duke of Newcastle, the colonial secretary, sounded Lawley as to his willingness to accept the governorship of South Australia. After the duke of Newcastle's retirement on 8 June 1854, his successor at the colonial office, Sir George Grey, made the offer in formal terms, and Lawley accepted it—with disastrous result to his career. ”

“ The boy put on weight rapidly, and his riding opportunities while he held a jockey's licence were in consequence restricted. His abilities developed slowly, although he rode two other winners in 1876, eight in 1877, thirteen in 1878, eight in 1879, and nineteen in 1880.
In 1879 there began an association with Richard Marsh, then training at Lordship Farm, Newmarket, who became trainer for Edward VII when Prince of Wales. Marsh made Watts first jockey to the prince. Watts's first important success was gained in 1881, when he won the Cambridgeshire on the American horse Foxhall. ”

“ Between 1864 and 1902 Machell's own horses won 540 races, worth 110,010l. Apart from his sound knowledge of horses, Machell's success was largely attributable to his judgment of human character, to his business-like methods, and to his patience. Machell, who in his early days proved himself a swift short-distance runner, died at St. Leonards, Sussex, on 11 May 1902, and was buried in Newmarket cemetery. A portrait in oils of Machell, mounted on a grey Arab horse, watching a training gallop on Newmarket Heath, is at Crackanthorpe Hall, Appleby. ”

“ During the seventeen years he had horses in training Miller won 161 races, worth 114,005l.
Miller established a high-class breeding farm at Hamilton Stud, Newmarket, where Rock Sand was foaled. He was elected a member of the Jockey Club in 1903, and was a steward of that body when he died in 1906. In December 1905 he sold by auction most of his mares, and Roquebrune was purchased by a Belgian breeder for 4500 guineas. Six weeks later, on 22 Jan. 1906, Sir James died at Manderston, his Scottish home, from a chill caught in the hunting-field. ”

“ Three brothers who survived infancy, Thomas (d. 1880) , Joseph (d. 1880) , and Matthew [q. v. Suppl. I] , also became expert trainers. All were brought up about their father's training stable at Gullane. Thomas, the eldest, left Gullane in 1830, and settled at Middleham, in Yorkshire, where he trained for Lord Eglinton. In 1838 he was joined by his brother Matthew as 'head lad,' and later Joseph and John also served apprenticeships at Middleham. In 1853, Joseph went to Hsley. Thomas trained Ellington and Pretender, who won the Derbys of 1856 and 1869 ”

“ J. R. Keene sent him some horses to train, including Foxhall, who won the Grand Prix, the Cesarewitch and the Cambridgeshire in 1881, and the Ascot Cup in 1882. Day afterwards trained a few horses at Salisbury, but finally retired in 1892. Meanwhile he formed a large breeding stud at Alvediston, near Salisbury, in 1873, and to it he devoted much attention. At that establishment there were over sixty thoroughbred brood mares. ”

“ After his retirement from the saddle he long remained a familiar figure on the race-course. He held for many years a licence as deputy starter to the Jockey Club, and was also official starter to the Belgian Jockey Club. Living at Oakham, he regularly hunted with the Quorn and Cottesmore packs. He has always a cheerful and amusing companion, and published 'Riding Recollections and Turf Stories' in 1894, with a dedication to the duke of Hamilton, a good patron during his riding career. ”

“ The most important of his successes in handicaps was that gained in the Cesarewitch of 1898 with Chaleureux, destined to become the sire of the filly Signorinetta, who in 1908 won the Derby and Oaks for the Chevalier Ginistrelli. ”

“ From youth he took a keen interest in horse-racing. At first his attention was mainly confined to steeplechasers, and he rode many winners at Punchestown and elsewhere in Ireland. He was the owner of Seaman when that horse won the grand hurdle race at Auteuil, but had sold him to Lord Manners before he won the Grand National at Liverpool in 1882. ”

“ He was freely charged with turning to profitable personal use private information acquired as Gladstone's secretary, and he made admissions on being challenged by Sir George Grey which led to the cancelling of his colonial appointment. On 3 August Lawley's position was fully explained in the House of Commons by Sir George Grey, and in the discussion which followed Disraeli, Bright, Gladstone, and many others took part. Apart from questions of conduct, the bestowal of the governorship was censured on the ground of Lawley's youth ”

“ Maple's abundant energies were not absorbed by his business. He contested unsuccessfully the parliamentary division of South St. Pancras as a conservative in 1885, but in 1887, at a bye-election, became member for the Dulwich division, and represented that constituency until his death. In parliament he safeguarded the interests of the shop assistants, and for twelve years was the president of the Voluntary Early Closing Association. ”

“ John Gubbins, after being educated privately, inherited the Knockany property from his brother Stamer, and purchased the estate of Bruree, co. Limerick. A fortune was also left him by an uncle, Francis Wise of Cork. Settling at Bruree in 1868, he spent about 40,000l. in building kennels and stables, and buying horses and hounds. He hunted the Limerick country with both stag and fox hounds, and was no mean angler, until forced to stop by the operations of the Land League in 1882. ”

“ Meanwhile he became heir of an immense fortune left him by his great-uncle, Hugh McCalmont, of Abbeylands, co. Antrim, who died unmarried on 20 October 1887, leaving an estate valued at 3,121,931l. The residuary estate, amounting to about 3,000,000l., was left in trust to pay 2000l. a year to his grand-nephew for seven years after the testator's death, and then the capital and interest were to be transferred to the heir. In 1894 McCalmont thus came into possession of some 4,000,000l. A keen sportsman, he engaged largely in racing, yachting, and shooting. ”

“ In 1885 he rode four winners, in 1886 twelve, and in 1887 twenty-one. In 1888 he came into prominence by riding fifty-eight winners out of 288 mounts, and thenceforward held a foremost place. In 1889 he was victorious for the first time in a classic race, winning the Derby on the duke of Portland's Donovan, and in the same year headed the list of jockeys by riding 167 winners out of 674 mounts, a percentage of winners to mounts of 24.77. ”

“ Maple's association with the turf was marked by characteristic boldness and thoroughness. In 1883 he registered the racing colours of 'sky blue, black sleeves, gold cap,' which were eventually changed to 'white and gold stripes, claret cap.' For several years he raced under the pseudonym of 'Mr. Childwick,' from the name of his country seat, Childwickbury, near St. Albans, where he established an extensive breeding stud. Previously he had run a few horses in hunter races under the nom de course of 'Mr. ”

“ Returning to England in May 1865, he settled in London as a sporting writer and journalist, and quickly acquired a literary reputation. He was a frequent contributor to the 'Daily Telegraph,' with which he was connected until his death. ”

“ WAUGH, JAMES (1831–1905) , trainer of racehorses, born at Jedburgh on 13 Dec. 1831, was son of Richard Waugh, a farmer there. Brought up on his father's farm, he became in 1851 private trainer of steeplechasers at Cessford Moor to a banker named Grainger. He frequently rode the horses in races. In 1855 he went to Jedburgh to train for Sir David Baird and Sir J. Boswell, and four years later succeeded Matthew Dawson in the training establishment at Gullane. Thence he soon removed to Ilsley, in Berkshire, where he became private trainer to Mr. ”

“ He was buried in Newmarket cemetery. He was twice married: (1) in 1885 to Annie, daughter of Mrs. Lancaster of the Black Bear Hotel, Newmarket; and (2) in 1901 to Lutetia Annie, daughter of Francis Hammond of Portland House, Newmarket. ”

“ In some of the events successes were scored several times. His horses also won many important prizes in Germany. Returning to Newmarket in 1880, he settled first at Middleton Cottage and then at Meynell House for the rest of his life. ”

“ In 1881 the partners transferred their horses to John Porter at Kingsclere, and a series of important successes followed. In 1883 the partners Avon the Derby with St. Blaise; in 1891 Common won the Two Thousand Guineas, the Derby, and the St. ”

“ During the four seasons this horse was in training he won the huge sum of 57,455l.—as a two-year-old 4577l., at three years old 18,860l., at four 31,498l., and at five 2520l. This is the largest amount won by any one horse on the English turf. ”
