Portrait of Madeline Brandeis Madeline Brandeis,  Little Tony of Italy

“ Next day Tony left Anna's garden early in the morning. He ambled along the smooth motor road, singing and begging whenever he found someone to beg from.
On each side of the road were black posts with white caps on them, glistening in the sun, polished to shine. Snow-white oxen passed, driven by farmers.
In vineyards grapevines climbed and twisted about old trees. In nearly every archway a baby, a goat, or a donkey stood and stared at Tony as he passed.
Women and children with large baskets or bundles on their heads trudged by. Tiny donkeys carried mountainous loads on their backs.

Portrait of Madeline Brandeis Madeline Brandeis,  Little Erik of Sweden

“ He had heard the music of sleigh bells on the other side of the snowy pine forest. Now came the thud of horses' hoofs and the crunch of a sleigh's runners, as it stopped before the Hansson home.
"Christmas is coming!" smiled Erik, and struck out again in big, vigorous strides. Christmas in Sweden means visitors and fun and lots of food; and Erik licked his lips. His cheeks glowed with health like ruddy, round apples.

Portrait of Madeline Brandeis Madeline Brandeis,  The Little Spanish Dancer

“ Carmen's castanets sing shrilly, with a rolling trill, and, all at once, Rey lifts his massive head and listens. The call is sweet. It speaks to him of pleasant things.
What shall he do? Obey that call and follow? Or shall he stay and fight it out with all his sharp-horned strength until the end?
A frenzied murmur issues from the crowd. Slowly the people rise together in their seats, as if a mountain heaved. The bull has turned and now begins to trot toward Carmen's side.
