“ One of his eyes was swollen shut, but the other opened wonderingly in the bright sunlight of the Flamingo's deck. His first thought was for Miss Newberry. He tried to rise, but his hands were lashed behind him and his ankles bound. With an impatient exclamation at his helpless predicament, he rolled back and closed his good eye from the hot glare of the sun.
When he next peered forth through half-closed lids, it was to stare uncomprehendingly into the grinning, wolflike countenance of Meech. The engineer broke into a malevolent chuckle.
