Portrait of Sumana Harihareswara Sumana Harihareswara,  Be Bold: An Origin Story (2012)

“ I ask you to not just use your empathy when someone you know and like is going through a tough time. I ask you to think, "where are you coming from?" when that wannabe Summer of Code student asks for directions because he's too scared to poke around for himself.
I'm asking you for the kind of hospitality that my parents showed new arrivals, sometimes on zero notice. Sometimes they were a little tired, from raising two kids and working their jobs and making a magazine. But this work of hospitality, of disciplined empathy, is how we get to a more perfect union.

“ The Wikimedia movement really privileges liberty, way over hospitality. And for many people in the Wikimedia movement, free speech, as John Scalzi put it, is the ability to be a dick in every possible circumstance. Criticize others in any words we like, change each other's words, and do anything that is not legally prohibited.
Hospitality, on the other hand, is thinking more about right speech, just speech, useful speech, and compassion. We only say and do things that help each other. The first responsibility of every citizen is to help each other achieve our goals, and make each other happy.

Portrait of Sumana Harihareswara Sumana Harihareswara,  UX Is A Social Justice Issue (2014)

“ Well, I can speak as a tech veteran.
This is where I start saying controversial things.
Let's look at what it takes to do user experience work. You have to look at your service from the point of view of someone who knows a lot less than you, and see where they're coming from. You have to imagine the reasons why they want what they want. Seeing that causation, seeing the connection between what someone's doing now and all the causation that went before it, is empathy. It's a little like reverse engineering; you're trying to unlock the DRM that's stopping them from getting what they need.
