Portrait of Torquato Tasso Torquato Tasso,  Jerusalem Delivered

“ Answered, “I yield to thee, thou worthy art,
I am thy prisoner, fortune is thy friend:
On Altamoro great thy conquest bold
Of glory shall be rich, and rich of gold:
CXLII
“My loving queen, my wife and lady kind
Shall ransom me with jewels, gold and treasure.”
“God shield,” quoth Godfrey, “that my noble mind
Should praise and virtue so by profit measure,
All that thou hast from Persia and from Inde
Enjoy it still, therein I take no pleasure;
I set no rent on life, no price on blood,
I fight, and sell not war for gold or good.”

Portrait of Torquato Tasso Torquato Tasso,  Amyntas, A Tale of the Woods — Act IV (1820)

“ But what dost thou suppose
The reason of his death?
DAPHNE.
Thine own.
SYLVIA.
My death?
I do not understand thee.
DAPHNE.
The report then
Of thy sad end he heard and he believed;
And it has certainly, by this time, driven him
To some most desperate end on his own part.
SYLVIA.
Nay, thy suspicion will turn out as groundless,
As it has done just now. Every one takes
All possible care of his own life, believe me.
DAPHNE.
Oh Sylvia, Sylvia, thou hast no conception
Of what love's fierceness in a heart can do;
A heart, at least, of flesh and blood, not stone
As thine is.

Portrait of Torquato Tasso Torquato Tasso,  Amyntas, A Tale of the Woods — Act I (1820)

“ The grass is the lamb's food, the lamb the wolf's;
But cruel love delights to feed on tears,
And seems to satiate never.
AMYNTAS.
Alas! Alas!
Love has drained all my tears; it is my blood
Which he must thirst for now. I hope and trust,
He and this impious one will have it shortly.
THYRSIS.
Amyntas! dear Amyntas! talk not so:
'Tis idle. Take good heart. This cruel one
May treat thee ill; but thou can'st find another.
AMYNTAS.
Ah me, another! I have lost myself.
How can I find me joy, myself being gone?
THYRSIS.
Do not despair. Thou'lt win her heart at last.
