“ Expansion of plantations often involves wetland drainage and loss of upstream forests. This results in reduced water runoff during the drier months and may therefore, given the relationship of flat-headed cat distribution to dry season rainfall levels, contribute to the loss of habitat. As we could not incorporate these threats into our estimates, the observed loss of suitable habitat is likely to be conservative. These threats require urgent and careful further elucidation, since the long-term consequences of large-scale agrochemical use, especially in oil palm plantations, are uncertain. ”
