Arviragus

Definition and stakes

Young Folks Treasury, Volume 3…

“ Sir, I will be thy true and humble wife until I die!"
Then Arviragus took his bride home with him to his castle [pg 172] by the sea. He honored Dorigen as much as he had done before his marriage, and tried to fulfil her wishes in everything. Dorigen was just as eager to please Arviragus as he was to please her, and they were happy together in all their work and play.
Arviragus stayed quietly at home for a year, but after that he grew restless. He felt that no true knight had a right to live on quietly at home, with nothing to do except to order his castle and to hunt.

“ Enter Belarius, Guiderius and Arviragus.
BELARIUS.
You, Polydore, have prov’d best woodman and

But for the end it works to. Come, our stomachs
Will make what’s homely savoury; weariness
Can snore upon the flint, when resty sloth
Finds the down pillow hard. Now, peace be here,
Poor house, that keep’st thyself!
GUIDERIUS.
I am thoroughly weary.
ARVIRAGUS.
I am weak with toil, yet strong in appetite.
GUIDERIUS.
There is cold meat i’ th’ cave

Ellen C. Clayton,  Female Warriors, Vol. 1 (of 2)

“ She was the daughter of Cadalla, King of the Brigantes; and, through her mother, Europeia, daughter of Evanus, King of Scotland, she claimed descent from the kings of Troy and the Ptolemies of Egypt.
Boadicea's career was a sad and a stormy one from first to last. At an early age she was compelled by her step-mother, the wicked, ambitious, Cartismandua, to marry Arviragus, son of that queen by her first husband, King Cymbeline. Arviragus was King of the Iceni, who possessed a great part of Essex, Norfolk, and Cambridgeshire.
