Darkness had closed down. Out of the night beyond the clearing came the weird noises of the swamp, while in the yellow lamp-light loomed the figure of its guardian, silent, motionless. To Bowman there was something uncanny in the situation. It must be brought to an end.

Yes, a prospector, but a long beard, hair to the shoulders, beer guzzler always dreaming about the past? Not a bit of it! Tom Kennedy is young, young as a boy. Keen as any youngster, too.”
“And clean,” Mrs. Bowman put in. “Never drinks a drop. I don’t think he even smokes. ”

“ Supporting the crowning group is a drum with crouching figures of toilers in relief, entitled "The Burden Bearers."
The Adventurous Bowman is the title of the surmounting statue. The heroic Bowman, facing the skies and the seas, and launching his arrow into the unknown, is the symbol of the impulse that leads men to dare all to achieve victory. At the left of the central figure is a man of smaller stature, leaning against the Bowman to give him support. On the other side a woman crouches, looking up as the arrow speeds on its way. ”

I remember giving no command; we sprang out of the woods, trailing our rifles in our left hands; and Bowman fired at me and, missing, started to run ”

Right beneath the metal arm, Bowman's dwarfed figure crept doggedly ahead. Forward, inch by breathless inch. Kelp thickened, washed away; the two hulking submersibles, captor and captive, surged onward—but just a little faster went the valiant figure with the black charge on its back.
The towing monster had its snout in the cavern. The darkness thickened. Bowman was quarter way!
He plunged desperately. Half way!
"I'm there, Keith! Now for it!"
"Oh, God!" Wells cried. "They see you ”

“ CRANK STORIES THE TRAGEDY OF OLIVER BOWMAN Oliver Bowman was sitting opposite his sister after dinner, watching her cracking walnuts in her strong, firm hands. The wonder of it never failed: she put two walnuts in her palms, pressed her hands together as if in silent prayer, and then there was a great crash and pieces of walnut-shell flew about the table. ”

"It is unjust to say so, Deborah," I retorted warmly. "Dries Bowman is already on his way to answer the militia call!" ”

“ It should be mentioned here that before Fred left New York Mr. Wainwright had given him a gun which would serve him as an excuse for his journey.
"We'll go out together to-morrow. My name's Bowman."
Fred heard the name with a thrill of excitement. Why, this must be the man referred to in Sinclair's letter as having instigated him to the crime. He surveyed Bowman with attention, taking stock of him, so to speak. He found him to be a man of middle height, rather spare than stout, with dark, shifty eyes and a sallow complexion. ”

“ The idea of any man thanking him for a mangrove flat tickled Bowman, but he did not laugh.
"What are you giving us?" his manager asked him the next morning, when it became evident that Strode intended to stay on Lanua.
"I'm giving you a young man who says we don't let him work hard enough," said Bowman, settling back amongst the launch cushions. ”

"Who wouldn't?" interposed Bowman impatiently. "In New York you can live. Here in St. Victor one can only vegetate."
"Don't you expect to go back to New York some day, Mr. Sinclair?" asked Fred.

"When our business in Canada is completed," said Bowman, "we shall probably both go back."
"Are you going to sleep here to-night, Bowman?" asked Sinclair.
"No, I think not. I have taken a room in the hotel." ”

“ Meet me at the landing six o'clock sharp, if you feel like going any further in the matter."
"All right," said Strode, "I will."
He kept the appointment, and to the tick of the stated hour Bowman's launch, a sleek thing of polished brass and glittering enamel, shot out from the landing. It was said that he was the only man in the Islands who could keep a Kanaka to time.
On arrival at Lanua, Bowman, who believed in surprise visits, proceeded to make his manager's life rather less attractive than it was under ordinary circumstances, and those were nothing to write home about. ”

The Bowman Bros. are frequently spoken of as the “brilliant brothers Bowman,” and justly, too, for no duo of vaudeville performers to-day give greater promise than these two boys, whose versatility is a matter of much comment among artists of more lengthy experience.
They have appeared in burlesque, drama, farce and minstrelsy, and in each have scored unqualified successes. ”
