William Allen

“ I had often heard of 'Professor W. G. Allen,' who, while connected with the Central College, in the State of New York, and respected there as a man and a teacher, was obliged to leave his native country for the offence of marrying a white lady of respectable family and great excellence of character, who is now much liked and esteemed by her numerous friends in this city. [Pg 116] I became acquainted with you soon after your arrival in London; and particularly during your residence in Ireland I have had nearly as much opportunity of knowing you as any of your acquaintances here. ”

“ Allen then settled in Highland county, Ohio, where he was clerk of courts and recorder in 1809-'16. He commanded a mounted regiment under Gen. William Henry Harrison in 1812-'13, was a state representative in 1816, state senator in 1817-'26, and speaker of the house in 1819-'26. He was acting governor of Ohio in 1821-'2, governor in 1826-'30, and in 1846-'48 was president of the first state board of agriculture. While he was governor, he did much to extend and improve the common-school system, encouraged manufacturing companies, and promoted penitentiary reform. ”

“ His son, Charles Morse Allen (Wesleyan, 1882) , was a teacher of natural sciences at Wyoming seminary, Pa., 1882-'89, and became a professor of chemistry in Pratt institute, Brooklyn, N.Y., in 1889; and his son, William Albert, Maine state college, 1874, was a civil engineer Maine Central railroad, 1874-'79, and chief engineer, M.C.R.R., 1878-'96, and was killed by accident, March 21, 1896, while inspecting a bridge at Lewiston, Maine. Charles F. Allen died at Portland, Maine, Feb. ”

All of John Barclay's life and hopes and dreams and visions are spread out before him on the ground. So he closes his eyes, and braces his soul, and then, having risen, whistles as he limps lightly—for a man past fifty—down to the boat. ”

“ As for the army of the dead below, for all their torture, for all their agony and the misery they left behind for society to heal or help or neglect–the army of the dead had its requiem that New Year’s eve, when the bells and whistles and sirens clamored for money that brings wealth, and wealth that brings power, and power that brings pleasure, and pleasure that brings death–and death? ”

“ Edwin Allen, originally from Welton, Maine, came to Princeton in 1855 and engaged in farming.
John H. Allen came from Maine to Princeton in 1854, engaged in farming and became prominent as a public spirited citizen. He held various positions of trust in the county and was appointed receiver of the land office at Fergus Falls by President Hayes, and resides there.
A. B. Damon came from Maine to Princeton in 1853 and made the first claim on the town site.
C. H. Chadbourne was born at Lexington, Massachusetts. At the age of sixteen he embarked in a seafaring life in which he continued nine years. ”
