“ Gillingham and his customers to be important and useful, young Williamson never assumed any sense of it and was the same unconceited chap that he was the first day he came into the store.

“ He died at Cobham, Kent, on 3 Oct. 1701, and was buried on 14 Oct. in the Duke of Richmond's vault in King Henry VII's chapel in Westminster Abbey (Chester, Reg. of Burials, pp. 249, 251) . Williamson's widow was buried in Westminster Abbey on 11 Nov. 1702, leaving no issue by her second husband.
Rather a man of affairs than a statesman, Williamson appears to have been dry and formal in his manner; he was strictly methodical, scrupulous and exact in the transaction of business, subservient in all things to his chiefs, and severe and exacting towards his subordinates. ”

“ Williamson's narrative conveys the irresistible impression that he was a man of eminently firm nerve, undying hope, and unconquerable energy—such a character as the Indian tribe would respect, and, after a sufficient trial, desire to incorporate with itself. ”

Young Williamson came to Philadelphia, saying to himself, "I must and will conquer circumstances." All his strength rose and asserted itself when his will power became enlisted in his work.
In 1837 the firm of Williamson & Burroughs was dissolved. Isaiah retired, and his youngest brother, Mahlon, became the active Williamson of the firm. ”

“ Williamson put aside a lucrative practice, and at once, entered on a course of preparation for his new work for which his previous life and training had already given him great fitness.
In 1833, he put himself under the care of the Presbytery of Chillicothe, removed with his family to Walnut Hills, Cincinnati, and entered Lane Seminary. While the Pond brothers in their log cabin at Lake Calhoun were studying the Sioux language, Dr. Williamson was completing his theological course on the banks of the beautiful river. He was ordained to the office of the gospel ministry in 1834. ”

Williamson be familiar all over the land as one who loved his fellowmen, and who held exceptional wealth only in trust for the general good. ”

“ It was reorganized under the name of Williamson, Burroughs & Clark. Isaiah left money in the firm as a special partner.
This was the end of Isaiah V. Williamson's active participation in the life of Philadelphia as a drygoods merchant. He felt that he had made a comfortable fortune in less than twelve years, and in those times the possession of one hundred thousand dollars was considered a large fortune. For a man still in his thirties to have made in a little over a decade a sum like this by straight business dealing—no speculation—was a remarkable feat. ”

“ How well she knew, though the terrible years had changed the brave young face in the portrait almost beyond the recognition of a stranger. All the gay audacity was gone, therefore much of the individuality which had distinguished it for Virginia. The strong, clear features of the man looked, as he lay there asleep, as if they had been carved from old ivory; the lines were sharpened, there were hollows in the cheeks and under the black lines of the lashes. Even in sleep the dark brows were drawn together in a slight frown, and the clean-cut lips drooped in unutterable melancholy. ”

"They tell me," remarked Williamson, "that you have given a hundred thousand to move the House of Refuge boys out into the country. That is good. There is something in nature to heal the diseased mind as well as the diseased body." ”

“ Williamson’s, in fact, does not cope with modern notions—“Take it or leave it” is their motto. The all-invading business girl has not yet dared to put her nose in here—she would probably create a revolution if she did. ”

“ Wanamaker made an address in which he said, in urging upon the students to be worthy of their election, that Isaiah Williamson, if he knew, would never be satisfied to have a thousand dollars of his money spent upon a ten-cent boy, which seems to have been wrought into the fundamental work of the School. ”

“ While his comrades jabbered together, in patois which flung in a French word now and then, like a sop to Cerberus, he spoke not a word; yet I saw his lips tighten, as he laid his arm over the neck of a small but well-built mule of a colour which matched its master's clothing. The animal rubbed a brown velvet head against the brown waistcoat which, perhaps, covered a fast-beating heart. From that instant I knew that this was my man, and this my mule, as certainly as if they had been tattooed with my family crest and truculent motto: "What I will, I take."

“ She also has to perfection the not-hearing, not-seeing knack, which is the most convenient thing possible in such a mixed family circle.
“Charlie Williamson arrived yesterday, and, with the most jovial entertaining manner, has all his mother’s delicacy of feeling and excessive kindness of heart. When he heard of the B. catastrophe, he went up at once from Aldershot to see Italima in London. ‘Your mother was quite crushed,’ he says, ‘but as for your dear sister, there isn’t a girl in England has the pluck she shows. ”

“ Once, on being remonstrated with by a man he had thus employed, on the uselessness of the work, Williamson said, “You do as you are told—you honestly earn the money by the sweat of your brow, and the mistress can go to market on Saturday night—I don’t want you to think.” He often regaled his work-people with a barrel of ale or porter, saying they “worked all the better for their throats being wetted.” His vast excavations when they were in their prime, so to speak, must have been proof of the great numbers of men he employed. He always said that he never made a penny by the sale of the stone. ”

“ When questioned as to the activities of Mrs. Elizabeth Tyler, Mr. Williamson described her as a business woman who was engaged in the work of propagating Ku Kluxism as she would in any other mercantile pursuit, without any altruistic motives whatever. This is brought out in the following colloquy:
“Mr. Campbell. It is purely a business proposition, so far as she is concerned?
“Mr. Williamson. Absolutely.
“Mr. Campbell. She is using the mysticism, the regalia, the paraphernalia, the masks, and all of the literature of the order for the purpose of making money out of it? Is that correct? ”
