Alyssum

Definition and stakes

Elisabeth Woodbridge Morris,  The Jonathan Papers

“ I said at luncheon one day, "I got the sweet alyssum seed this morning.
"Sweet alyssum?" He looked blank. "What do you want sweet alyssum for? It's a foolish flower. I thought you weren't going to have a garden, anyway."
"I'm not; but don't you remember about the phlox? We said we'd put in some sweet alyssum to mark it—so it wouldn't get cut down."
"The bulbs will do that, and when they're gone it will be high enough to show."
"Well, I have the seed, and I might as well use it. It won't do any harm."
"No. I don't believe sweet alyssum ever hurt anybody," said Jonathan.

Portrait of Walter Prichard Eaton Walter Prichard Eaton,  The Idyl of Twin Fires

“ Another bed we are proud of is filled with love-in-a-mist rising out of sweet alyssum–all feathery blue and white, like our own skies. But we, too, have the showier effects. Already the best of them is coming–about a hundred feet of larkspur along the west wall of the garden, and at its base pink Canterbury bells. Unfortunately, the bells will be passing as the larkspur comes to its fullest flower, but for about four or five days in ordinary seasons that particular border of pink and blue is a rare delight.
I wonder, by the way, if Stella has watered the schyzanthus plants this morning.

William Curtis,  The Botanical Magazine, Vol. 04

“ Plants which flower early, and continue a long while in bloom, are deservedly preferred, more especially by those who content themselves with a partial collection; of that number is the present species of Alyssum, which begins to flower in March, and continues to blossom through April, May, and June, and, if favourably situated, during most of the summer.
It is properly a rock plant, being hardy, forming with very little care a neat tuft of flowers, and not apt to encroach on its neighbours.
May be propagated by parting its roots in Autumn, or by cuttings.
