Portrait of Florence Merriam Bailey Florence Merriam Bailey,  A-Birding on a Bronco

“ When insinuating yourself into the secrets of the bird world, it is not well to be too obtrusive at first: it is a mistake to spend the day when you make your first call; so contenting myself with thinking of the morrow, and fixing the small oak in my memory, I took myself off before the blue-gray should tell on me to her mate. As I rose to go, a dove flew out of the oak—she had been brooding right over my head. Another nest, and a mourning dove's, one of the most gentle and winning of birds! ”

Robert L. Merz,  Jaw Musculature of the Mourning and White-winged Doves

“ Probably the Mourning Dove has failed to adapt to nectar-feeding as yet, and the White-winged Dove is the primary exploiter of this food niche. It should be noted, also, that the head of the Mourning Dove is smaller than the white-wing's, and perhaps there is no need for an elongated beak for reaching deeply into the flowers.
The lengthened bill should produce no difficulties in protraction of the upper mandible and depression of the lower for the reason that in the dove there is no known resistance offered to these movements.
