Sealer

Definition and stakes

Portrait of Gordon Stables Gordon Stables,  Wild Adventures round the Pole

“ On warm, sunny days the seals lie close and sleep soundly, but they always have their sentries set. Kill the sentry, and many others are at your mercy; miss him, or merely wound him, and he gives the alarm instanter, and all the rest jump helter-skelter into the sea, according you a beautiful view of their tail-ends, which you don’t find very advantageous in the way of making a bag.
A good sealer, like a good skirmisher, takes advantage of every bit of cover, and many a death-blow is dealt from the shelter of a lump of loose ice.

Portrait of James Fenimore Cooper James Fenimore Cooper,  The Sea Lions; Or, The Lost Sealers

“ If we remain near each other a week, 't will be quite out of the common way."
"I don't know that, sir. I was once in a sealer that, do all she could, couldn't get shut of a curious neighbour. When seals are scarce, and the master don't know where to look for 'em, he is usually glad to drop into some vessel's wake, if it be only to pick up her leavin's."
"Outfits are not made on such chances as that. These Vineyard people know where they are going as well as we know ourselves; perhaps better."
"There is great confidence aboard here, in the master, Captain Gar'ner.

Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley,  English Surnames: Their Sources and Significations

“ The old sealmaker, an important tradesman in a 406day when men were much better known by their crests than now, left its mark in the early ‘Seler.’ In the ‘Issues of the Exchequer’ we find a certain ‘Hugh le Seler’ commissioned to make a new seal for the See of Durham. The modern form is ‘Sealer.’ Professional writers and copiers were common. The calling of scribe has given us our many ‘Scrivens’ and ‘Scriveners,’ descendants of the numerous ‘William le Scrivayns’ and ‘John le Scrivryns’ of our mediæval rolls. ”
