American Association of State Highway Officials, U.S. Route Numbering Committee Agenda (1959)
“ Establishment ofan Alternate Route This routing would begin at the intersection of present U. S. Route 6 and State Route 90 east of Dexter, thence north over State Route 90 via Redfleld, Adel and Waukea to an intersection with present U. S. Route 6 and Interstate Route 35, four (4) miles west of Des Moines. REJECTED—Violates the concept of the U. S. Numbered System, by which the best and shortest route available is marked for the convenience of the traveling public and there is no indication an "Alternate Route" is needed to avoid overloading the major route. ”
