Roy Rockwood,  Bomba the jungle boy (1926)

“ THE JAWS OF DEATH
At sight of the cayman, Bomba, for one awful instant, felt as though he were paralyzed. Strength seemed suddenly to have left his arms and legs.
But only for a moment. The next instant the instinct of self-preservation asserted itself, and he shot forward like an arrow.
He knew he could not reach the shore before the dreadful thing would be upon him. But he would struggle till the last. As a final resource he had his knife.
But what would that knife avail against murderous jaws armed with a score of knives?

Roy Rockwood,  Bomba the jungle boy on Jaguar Island (1927)

“ With an exclamation of impatience, Bomba broke the spell that was stealing over him and leaped to his feet.
“Bomba will go!” he cried, and his vibrant voice rang out like a challenge through the jungle. “Is Bomba a woman to listen to such things and tremble? Shall he whimper as the monkey whimpers when he hears the roar of the jaguar? No! Bomba will go. He will face the jaguars. He will face the ghosts. He will face the demons. Bomba has spoken!”
Ashati gave vent to a wailing cry and Neram covered his face with his hands. In their superstitious fancy Bomba was already as good as dead.

Roy Rockwood,  Bomba the jungle boy at the giant cataract (1926)

“ Chilled to the bone, shivering, he went to work again. More branches and still more were pushed aside and dropped into the pool. The lapping of the water sounded in his ears as though death were crooning its awful lullaby.
Wearied of holding up his head, his arm one agonizing ache from the effort of using it in that strained position, Bomba let himself relax for a moment and lay back gasping for breath.
Lying there, the water was over his ears, filling them with a drumming sound. It climbed still higher, as steady and implacable as fate.
