Professor

Definition and stakes

George Fitch At Good Old Siwash

How a professor can go through an assorted collection of brain stufferies, get so many college degrees that his name looks like Halley's Comet with an alphabet tail, and then teach college students for forty years without even taking one of them apart to find out what he is made of, beats my time! That's a college professor for you, right through. He thinks of a college student only as something to teach—whereas, of all the nineteen hundred and eighty-seven things a college student is, that is about the least important to his notion.

Thomas Wilcox A choice drop of honey from the rock… (1821)

Glorious professor, thou shalt be winnowed; every vein of thy profession will be tried to purpose. It is terrible to have it all come tumbling down, and to find nothing but it to bottom upon.
Soaring professor, see to thy waxen wings betimes, which will melt with the heat of temptations. What a misery is it to trade much, and break at length, and have no stock, no foundation laid for eternity in thy soul!

Portrait of Friedrich Heinrich Karl de la Motte Fouqué Friedrich Heinrich Karl de la Motte Fouqué The German Novelists (1826)

Professor always looks so kind and pleasant, and not so old as the other professors; then he can tell so many fine stories of by-gone times, which though they almost make one’s hair stand on end, are very pretty to hear. And as to the strange lodger, he is, perhaps, much better in his heart, than he sometimes appears to me.
