Portrait of J. M. Barrie J. M. Barrie,  The Admirable Crichton

“ CRICHTON (too grandly) . A king! I sometimes feel— (For a moment the yellow light gleams in his green eyes. We remember suddenly what TREHERNE and ERNEST said about his regal look. He checks himself.) I say it harshly, it is so hard to say, and all the time there is another voice within me crying— (He stops.)
LADY MARY (trembling but not afraid) . If it is the voice of nature—
CRICHTON (strongly) . I know it to be the voice of nature.
LADY MARY (in a whisper) . Then, if you want to say it very much, Gov., please say it to Polly Lasenby.
CRICHTON (again in the grip of an idea) . A king!

Portrait of J. M. Barrie J. M. Barrie,  Tommy and Grizel

“ What is genius? It is the power to be a boy again at will. When I think of him flinging off the years and whistling childhood back, not to himself only, but to all who heard, distributing it among them gaily, imperiously calling on them to dance, dance, for they are boys and girls again until they stop—when to recall him in those wild moods is to myself to grasp for a moment at the dear dead days that were so much the best, I cannot wonder that Grizel loved him. I am his slave myself; I see that all that was wrong with Tommy was that he could not always be a boy. ”

Portrait of J. M. Barrie J. M. Barrie,  The Little Minister

“ If I understand Babbie at all, it is, I think, because I loved Margaret, the only woman I have ever known well, and one whose nature was not, like the Egyptian's, complex, but most simple, as if God had told her only to be good. Throughout my life since she came into it she has been to me a glass in which many things are revealed that I could not have learned save through her, and something of all womankind, even of bewildering Babbie, I seem to know because I knew Margaret.
No woman is so bad but we may rejoice when her heart thrills to love, for then God has her by the hand.
